So I'm not doing this to gripe or complain as much as I want to. This is for my knowledge so I can defend myself and others alike. I'm currently staying and the barracks of unit "B" because I did a lateral transfer to new unit "A". Currently working night shift and have been up since 1200 the day prior. Went to work at 1600 and got off work at 0430. (I still don't receive separate rations so I had no meal or mre during the majority of that time). I finally make it home in bed to sleep at 0500 to get woken up at 0630 by an NCO from unit B telling me everyone needs to go outside. Me absolutely tired as hell puts on some civilian clothing and goes outside to find out the MPS will be searching the building with dogs because they suspect drugs. A buddy of mine got called in not for drugs but for a training round from the 30 mm gun which is inert and not even able to fire but that's beside the point it was under a drawer in the very back underneath several items. They're gone through his room and searched thoroughly with only the first sergeant and a sergeant first class present. I don't know what his punishment will be but that's not my concern. My concern is that I was never even notified of this even happening, they have now ruined my sleep schedule and took them roughly 3 hours to finish. And I have no idea what my room is going to look like when I get back such as my $1,800 headset being thrown against the wall or my PC tipped over because they want to see what's behind it or my medical records that are in a safe that they shouldn't be going through. anything in the world they want to go through ruin who's to say that they're responsible when I don't even know who's going in through my room and I come to find out stuff is broken stuff is out of place stuff is stolen and let's see if they did want to charge me for something with no MP present and no drug dogs present that alerted the room saying I have something bad. And meanwhile this whole time I'm absolutely tired and have working here in a couple hours again to do probably another 12 hour shift. Like I said I'm not trying to complain on here I just want to know what grounds do I have to stand on if something like this occurred. And my current chain of command never knew anything about this or if they did they didn't tell me about it?

Yeah, sounds like you caught some suck that has nothing to do with you. Try to set aside that fact that you haven't eaten much or gotten much sleep (probably would have been better if you hadn't even gone to bed yet...double suck). I doubt they will run around throwing things against walls and breaking personal property without cause, but I get why you are anxious. You nor your chain-of-command would be in the loop for this kind of barracks inspection in a barracks designated for another unit. I lived off post, and was called in to stand in the Bs while MPs searched rooms, then we marched outside so they could sniff ALL our cars. And any the dogs hit on were opened and rummaged through; though most were for ammo and fireworks-I guess the dogs are trained for those too.

Understandable, and like I said I'm not trying to do it to complain and I highly they would be tossing the stuff around, but for my safety I need to know what right do I have or should I just move everything out of the barracks and have nothing personal at all in them.

SPC (Join to see) - I get it, and normally I'd say something along the lines of "quit yer bitchin', you're in the Army", but your situation is kind of understandable, just embrace the suck and try to make the best of it; it won't last all day (and it's yet another "Army story" you'll have...aint you lucky, LOL!). Moving to a place off post may not be an easy sell to your chain-of-command if you're not married, but even if you do, that doesn't mean your chain can't check on your living conditions. Just keep that in mind. Good luck!

Consider this- the room, building, street, block and post belong to the government.

The military / command endeavors to maintain good order and discipline. If they brought the dogs- they suspect drugs. Not good order or discipline, it’s illegal and my tax dollars are not meant to support that......so no- they don’t tell everyone about the inspection. If you have an issue with that- get out of the army.

Missed meals- if you were not afforded an opportunity to eat- your first line should be all over that. If you have 1,800$ headphones, you have a cell.....did you text your SL? SGT Almond would have brought you chow.

Broken items- yes, you have a claim provided you did your inventory when you moved in. They can’t break your stuff. That isn’t good for good order or discipline either. It goes both ways.

I had a really nice SLR camera stolen from the barracks back in the day. All my Tank Commander asked was why I didn't have it secured in my wall locker. I'm pretty sure a set of $1800 headphones would fall into the same category but as others have pointed out apparently the Army I served in was different than it is now. I saw it first hand at Fort Sill when I went to see my great niece graduate from BCT several months ago. I'm at the age where I no longer have decent night vision and had a hot shot Captain chew me out for getting lost on post. At least he was nice enough to allow me to follow him to the gate but I found his general lack of respect appalling.

Wow the Army has changed, you really should smoke yourself for bringing this up, if you don’t want to go through this, figure out how to get your own apartment! It is the Military, Health and Welfare’s are one of the Chain of Commands tools to help keep its Soldiers safe... here is a phrase from back in my days living in the barracks... Suck it Up. Sorry to be harsh but you literally stole time out of my life drawing me in to read this.

The question I have is, how much are you paying in rent????
I know that's not what you don't want to hear, but barracks are barracks and barracks life sucks. However, if there are issues like this they need to be brought to the chain of command and BOSS.

In terms of forfeited bah, he's probably paying several hundred dollars per month.

Sorry bud these things must happen to ensure our force is doing the right thing. Telling people about an inspection no longer makes it a surprise inspection and hence forth makes the whole purpose worthless. The only issue I can see is that you didn't receive meals. This can be addressed through your chain of command and a missed meal voucher.

im an MP. when you’re living in the barracks you have a reasonable right to privacy, an inspection is fine but if theres no MP present and theres no probable cause or valid suspicion that you have something you arent supposed to, I would either request mast, or go to your base legal services and explain what happened to see if theres any action you can take.

Sounds like bitching to me. You're pissed that you got woke up and now you are venting. You are assuming things that may or may not have even happened to your personal items. It's part of being in the military and living in military barracks. Get over it PFC and stop whining.
