What's the nicest, most beautiful family camping area you've experienced on a military installation?

No matter where you go on those routes, take time to see the "little things" It will be a great trip, unless you try to make it in the posted times! I don't Camp unless you count Hampton Inns, but I can tell you there are many sights to see on those routes, some are well known Natural things like caves, canyons, and cascades. Others like the tiny Wizard of Oz museum in Kansas, or the giant excavation machine in Pittsboro KS, where sixty people get in a bucket, get lifted fifty feet in the air, and have a wedding.
or stopping at Graceland, or Beal Street, or the old Route Sixty Six parts coming out of California into AZ...and picking it up again in St. Louis. So much to see. Have a blast stay safe, and don't drive at night if you don't have to.

The only camping I ever did on a military installation was at vandenberg. A mountain lion ate my toothpaste while I was away fishing. But other than that the area reminded me of the camping I did with my family as a kid.

TSgt Melissa Post - Melissa, how comfortable are you with the outdoors that allows you to casually say: " A mountain lion ate my toothpaste while I was away fishing." If I came back and discovered that, we would have to clean my pants, andwe would be in a Marriott within the hour. LOL

SGT Kevin Hughes - LOL well I mean I saw the signs that said "Caution: Mountain Lions are in this area." and I wasn't at the site when it happened. But when I returned it was no longer on the picnic table and it had some pretty sharp teeth marks through it. Somewhere out there, there is now a mountain lion with the freshest minty breath. Well maybe not anymore but back then hahaha.

Might need to factor in a few more days for travel, but maybe it's worth the detour...

avoid I70 in Ohio, traveled it last year and it was rough also stay out of the windy city, may tolls and lots of traffic. I would take the southern route. I just traveled a good part of it, road was good and traffic tolerable and a nice drive.

Take I-40, they are everywhere. The Smokies in TN/NC would be a great last stop. I reread and realized you were talking about on-base. KY has Campbell and Knox. Not much ACDU in TN. Arnold at Tullahoma and Millington may have one. If you can alter course a tad, The Land Between the Lakes (LBL) is Federal. It's between KY and Barkley Lake, and is great camping. They have buffalo that can be seen from the road, and an elk preserve that is less conspicuous. You can drive through it for a few bucks, but no guarantee of seeing them.

I can believe that, the 2 lane roads we were on was bad enough. We've only been there in the winter and prices were good then. out of the tourist season, now we have family in the area. We've made the drive through Cades cove and enjoyed that, sure some monster bucks in there

Enjoyed Cades Cove and more. Big bucks all over TN. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/01/09/whitetail-deer-record-tennessee/96363134/
Tennessee deer to be certified a world record
The Boone and Crockett Club won't have the banquet where it will be officially certified for another two years.

Sgt Jim Belanus - Some retired cop in IL shot a 51 pt with complex rack like the 47, boone and crockett are looking for their best to certify it, lengthy process. The most deer I ever saw was going north toward Scranton PA. On both sides of the interstate and they were all BIG (and dead), night driving through snow. Lots of semis too. Deer are a solid thud to them.

I have experinced that here and hate the thud. I don't like driving after dark because of it. To damn expensive to fix

Damneck VA has a great little camp ground near the beach
Don't miss Flaming Gorge recreation area and Niagra Falls isn't that much of a detour.

I have fondest memories of the military reservation across the highway from the main gate at Eilson AFB, Alaska.

Col Casey "Radio" G. - bring bug spray, wet weather gear, and head nets, but truly a worthwhile drive to get there.

Fort Sill and Fort Hood both have very nice camping areas with lakes for recreation. I liked Ft. Hoods' best because it had a small shop where you could buy soda, bottled water, charcoal or snacks.
