What's your favorite %22military memorial %22
There are some truly amazing memorials out there, whether in Washington, DC, at a hometown location, OCONUS, or anywhere else around the world; many are epic works of art in their own right, some are well known (with a national or international audiences), while others quietly tell their story relatively unknown to the masses. So, what's your most memorable military or military-related display or memorial? Where's it located and how/why does it move you? What is it that you find most compelling about the memorial or location? What makes this particular place or time unique, interesting, thought-provoking, moving, or special to you? Please feel free to share your stories, photographs, links, video or anything else needed to tell your story. This should be both fun and informative, and we'll get to learn a bit of history, context, and a little bit about each other in the process; thank you for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

Been there many times. Six of my eight great, great grandfathers served in the CSA during the Civil War.

LTC (Join to see), here's my photo of The Special Warfare Memorial Statue" aka the "Green Beret" taken at Fort Bragg, NC (of course). When I took this photo in AUG70, towards the end of my SF weapons training, the statue had been there less than a year.

Good to see a photo of the original location - first saw it there in '86. Have seen pictures of the new location but never been. Subsequently learned the history of how it got funded. Interesting.

LTC Stephen C. - I have a funny story the Special Warfare Center. It had a section called the "Hall of Heroes" which together made up the entire memorial back then. In 1998 I went there it there with my then 16 year old, now 38 year old, daughter. She wanted to get a picture of my name on a plaque in one of the display cases. Seeing that it was a locked glass enclosure, I suggest she go back up front and asked someone with the key to come back and open the door so she could get a picture without any glare. So she headed back up to the front of the building. In a couple of minutes a solder came running back like his life depended on it and unlocked it for her. She was following him with a silly smirk on her face. I'm wondering WTF -- why was he running? After she got the picture, I asked her about it. She told me that when she got up there she made her simple request and the guy responded, "Oh, that display case with all the dead guys?" I don't know where my daughter gets her smart-ass attitude, but she answered him by saying, "Yes, that's the one. Could you make it snappy, one of those dead guys is back there waiting for me." ;-)

My vote goes to the North Carolina monument at Gettysburg. Sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, created the memorial of bronze to honor the 15 regiments from North Carolina who participated in Pickett's Charge on the third day of the battle. &nbsp; The 26th North Carolina Infantry Regiment suffered the highest number of casualties of any Civil War Regiment on the first day of Gettysburg during fighting in the Herbst woods.

Though I have several brothers and a wife interned at military sites, Normandy in France brought tears while participating in a D-Day ceremony.&nbsp;<div><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Verdana;">"</span></div><div><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Verdana;">The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 and the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery site, at the north end of its half mile access road, covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. On the Walls of the Missing, in a semicircular garden on the east side of the memorial, are inscribed 1,557 names. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified."&nbsp;</span><br></div>

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Wake Island. On my last day there, I had the chance to visit 98 Rock and to learn about the 98 American civilian P.O.W.'s who remained on the island to build additional infrastructure for their Japanese captors, only to be executed by them. This rock tells that story.<br>

The battle for Wake Island was called "The Alamo of the Pacific" and for good reason. Those brave souls held out against incredible odds and gave their all. The were heroes when America desperately needed heroes in the early stages of WWII in the Pacific.

SSG William Patton , a lot of people tend to forget the Battle for Wake Island. It was amazing as to how many losses the Japanese had compared to the Marines and the civilians on Wake. It was just amazing as to what the Marines and civilians did to defend the island- "The Alamo of the Pacific", indeed.

Im with you on this, my favorite would be a memorial saying that no one had to die in defense of their country or otherwise. But it is a sad truth that this memorial will never exist.

All of them are my favorite because they honor ALL hero's that have sacrificed all for our freedoms. Some of these hero's have some and some gave all (their lives). that is why I say all are my favorites.
