It's no secret, we're big on nicknames in the military, and there's some really great ones out there... so, what's your favorite?  It could be a nickname that you had, or someone you know, from a move or tv show; it could be a nickname for a rank, base/location, career field, position/title, weapon system, piece of gear, personnel, or just about anything else under the sun. Perhaps it was a nickname for a mascot, civilian personnel, military family member, or something altogether different that has to do w/ the military, military life, or life from the military perspective.  Well, this should be an absolute blast folks; so, feel free to share any related info, facts, photos, links, historical context, or just plain entertaining sea stories.  The idea here is simple, to share fun and interesting info and to learn a thing or two in the process; now let's get this thing started, so pull up a keyboard, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

In Basic Training, my Battalion was the "River Raiders" which quickly became everything from "Refrigerators" to the much less PC "Panty Raiders" (strangely enough, initiated by one of our female Soldiers.)

And I couldn't help but snicker when the "Black Hawks" sounded off... they didn't enunciate well...

One of the troops at Cannon AFB referred to me as cool breeze. Not sure why but it stuck. Later in my career, since I didn't join until I was 23, I was clearly older than most at my rank and was usually referred to as Pappy.

Also, at RAF Lakenheath four of us Hispanics covered the three career fields maintaining cockpit avionics worked midshift. Since we had everything covered we took over most maintenance and called ourselves the Burrito Brothers.

BUT my all time favourite was an electrician who was a whiz and one day after being praised for his knowledge and skill declared, "I am the s#@t!" From that day on whenever flightline need an electrician, the call went out for "The S#@T"

There are other unglamorous nicknames given you because of performance as well.

Actually I had a lot of nicknames while in the service, most of which are unfit to put down in print and generally only used in conjunction with one of the many CS chambers or CS missions I ran (funny how that stuff brings out the vulgarity in people). But my favorite nickname was "trooper" from my time with the 11th ACR in Germany and yes I know they called everyone that but it still made me feel good hearing it.

Major Burns.    In the Stargate SG-1 pilot,  there was a security officer with Maj Insignia and on his arms,  SSGT stripes.   I was laughing at that..   Does that make me a major too or just a major pain?

SSgt Olson, that's great... awesome find!  Wow, Stargate SG-1 really took M*A*S*H's "Corporal-Captain" concept to the next level! lol

The original photo above was good, but somehow got cut off when posted; although, the mirror image on the right does show the "double rank."  So, let's try this one more time, hopefully this one posts correctly... the wording on the website  said that the actor must be some sort of hybrid officer/enlisted service member or "staff" sergeant major. lol  Great find SSgt Olson, thanks for posting!

In AIT I was “loose cannon”
I’m not artillery in any way, just...yeah I was 18 and liked 18 year old things.

In Iraq I was Duke (from GI Joe) or Bulldog (from RBF/thick build)

One of the staff nerds in my current unit calls me the Electromancer because I do eldritch things with lighting and math.

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
