There are a ton of great songs about military life, that reference the military in some way; some of the more modern works may have a video associated with it, and some of the older classics continue to define the military experience to this day. From country to rock, ballads & pop, to more traditional flavors--did a particular song inspire, educate, or simply strike a chord with you? Please feel free to share any inspiring military-related music, any music or songs that makes you think of/or reminds you of your military service, as well as any links, photos, descriptions or anything that helps you tell your story. The idea here is to have a fun and thought provoking discussion, which will be fun, informative, and provide a means to tell our stories... and to learn about one another as well as our sister services in the process. Wishing you all the best, I look forward to hearing from you, and interacting with you all in the threads!

I love the service songs, all five of them. I have played the service songs hundreds if not thousands of times. I do get distracted sometimes looking in to the crowd to see the veterans and current service members standing up.

The Field Artillery Song (The Caissons Go Rolling Along)

1. Over hill, over dale,
We have hit the dusty trail,
And those Caissons Go Rolling Along
Counter march! Right about!
Hear those wagon soldiers shout
While those Caissons Go Rolling Along

Chorus: For it’s “Hi! Hi! Hee!
In the Field Artillery
Call off your numbers loud and strong
And where e’er we go
You will always know
That those Caissons Are Rolling Along

2. To the front, day and night
Where the doughboys dig and fight
And those Caissons Go Rolling Along
Our barrage will be there
Fired on the rocket’s flare
While those Caissons Go Rolling Along - Chorus

3. With the cavalry, boot to boot
We will join in the pursuit
And those Caissons Go Rolling Along
Action front, at a trot
Volley fire with shell and shot
While those Caissons Go Rolling Along - Chorus

4. Should the foe penetrate
Ev’ry gunner lies in wait
And those Caissons Go Rolling Along
Fire at will, lay ‘em low
Never stop for any foe
While those Caissons Go Rolling Along - Chorus

5. But if fate me should call
And in action I should fall
Keep those Caissons a rolling Along
Then in peace I’ll abide
When I take my final ride
On a Caisson that’s Rolling Along - Chorus

After last Chorus, add
Batt’ry Halt!

Yes that's a good original song, but the Army changed it to the Army goes rolling along in the 60's as the Caissons were retired.

Anchor's Aweigh! We used to sing in on command in boot camp. Company 907 in Great Lakes. It would echo of the wall and the four part harmony of TTBB made it sound great. I was in the special units Bluejackets Chorus.

Midway March, by John Williams. It was in the Movie Midway. If you close your eyes while hearing it you can see why it is a great theme. You can almost see the Carriers and the planes taking off. And the battle that takes place that turned the tide in the Pacific. A great song and a great movie about our dark days leading up that tremendous victory. John Williams would do other military themes, and of course we all know his most famous themes that he wrote. But its this one that really makes you patriotic in a way.

Here are two clips of the music. One has scenes from the movie and is shorter

As I posted before, The Ballard of the Green Berets is my favorite and has been long before I even joined the service in 1982.  But in recent years, I have come to love this song and probable more so do to my son John serving in OEF and friends of mine and fellow vets who were who have passed on over the years due to military service:

I get what you are saying SGT Dean. There is something in the song about sending a regular guy off to war but a senator's son won't.  Something like that.
