There are a ton of great songs about military life, that reference the military in some way; some of the more modern works may have a video associated with it, and some of the older classics continue to define the military experience to this day. From country to rock, ballads & pop, to more traditional flavors--did a particular song inspire, educate, or simply strike a chord with you? Please feel free to share any inspiring military-related music, any music or songs that makes you think of/or reminds you of your military service, as well as any links, photos, descriptions or anything that helps you tell your story. The idea here is to have a fun and thought provoking discussion, which will be fun, informative, and provide a means to tell our stories... and to learn about one another as well as our sister services in the process. Wishing you all the best, I look forward to hearing from you, and interacting with you all in the threads!

hero of war - rise against
Zzyzx Rd - stone sour
Green fields of France - dropkick murphys
I have a tendency to love the darker side of music, so some might not exactly agree with all of these. Hero of war mostly I would think, but being a member of the uniformed service isn't always pretty, and I really love how it's depicted in this song. Zzyzx Rd, although I don't believe is a "military" song, depicts the military life so beautifully "I get to go home in one week, but I'm leaving home in 3 weeks, they throw me a bone just to pick me dry..." For example. I've always correlated it with the moments of homesick all of us feel from time to time. Being a Boston girl, I have a love for the Murphy's on principle alone, but this version is just so beautiful. Again, a darker side of the military song.

kokomo as done in a spoof in Bosnia by some Brits - great music and choreographing in a warzone, and the lyrics are great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smlrSYiYd_o

Arms for the Love of America by Irving Berlin, a.k.a. the Ordnance Corp Song. Major General Potts asked each one of us, while attending the Ordnance Officers Advance Course in 1993, if we knew the words. Toward the end of the course the class took it upon themselves to memorize the works. At the graduation ceremony, when they played the song, the entire class stood and sang the song along with the music.
The kicker...the following classes were required to learn and sing the song. I know this because by brother was in the class that followed mine.

My dad was a Marine and I was raised on the Marine Corps Hymn; all 3 versus plus my dads own verse(s); Korean war vet. I joined the Army to be different and to be my own person. After enlisting in 76, I found that the Army songs were long and dull and disappointing...made for marching in parades....the cassons go rolling along... when I was in I never learned all the words because it wasnt taught nor were they integrated into Army life, during my time in. When I was stationed in Germany, 78-80, AFRTS would broadcast the Big Band music. Glenn Miller was one of my favs, as his songs were part of Army life even in the 70s... and a great morale booster during WWII. After the Vietnam War, the Army had a confidence problem amonst other things while the Marines stayed the same since 1775, IMO. Needless to say in several assignments I was attached and assigned, Marine Detachments were present. My son is a Marine since 2007.

I like this song just because it shows military life isnt always easy. It shows what war can do to a person.
