President Trump has mentioned about creating a sixth military branch to solely focus on space defense and deal with extraterrestrials. What’s your take on it and will it be successful?

You're basically reinventing NASA under the DOD umbrella and budget. To get the minds that you'd likely need to populate such a force, you're going to be handicapping other branches. You're also going to likely have to make a completely different pay scale to attract and keep the type of people that this would require, or at least offer some very lucrative incentives.

Honestly, I think if this does happen it should either be a revamp of the USAF Space Command or a sub-department like the USMC is to the USN.

So how will differ from the USAF's Space Command that already exist???? I wonder if he even knows it exists and what their mission is.

MSgt Tony Marlin I think the intended concept is basically NASA run by the military with the addition of space shuttle door gunners.

So much ignorance here.
SGT Barrie wasn’t too far off.

Chairman Rodgers of the HASC Subcommittee on Strategic Affairs actually put a Space Corps into last year’s NDAA Bill, which would have been under Department of the AF.

This is not a revamp of AFSPC, it’s intended to be Joint.

Either we’ll get a Sub-Unified Command or a Unified (Combatant) Command.

ALL the services have Space professionals. And NONE of them “go to Space”. In the Army we’re called Functional Area 40 (MOS 40A).

In June 2017, the United States House Committee on Armed Services (HASC) voted to include language creating the U.S. Space Corps in the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act.[8] The new service would be administered by the United States Secretary of the Air Force, much as how the Marine Corps falls under the Department of the Navy, and guarantee it an equal seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.[9]

If they start handing out light sabers I’ll be first in line.

I'm quite interested to know more details about what specific known or emergent threats are prompting this decision...I mean, I can fly...I'm a pilot

A military Space Force already exists as a unified Command, it is called US Space Command and has Air Force, Army and Navy components headquartered on Peterson Air Force Base.
What it would do is turn that command and components into a Branch.

Correct. Much of what it is designed to do is to place all of the "space" assets into a single command structure. When one considers how dependent the current Military is on Satellites for communications, navigations, weapon systems control and surveillance, I'm not sure that it isn't one of the better ideas that he's had. Even Bloomberg understands the need. https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2018-06-21/trump-s-space-force-is-no-joke

No, sorry COL, not “correct” Captain.

Services do “Organize Train Equip”.
USA, USN, USMC and USAF each have Space professionals. In USA it’s FA40. A Space Force would roll those all out into a new “Department of the”.

Joint War fighting is left to Combatant Commands. In this case, under the current UCP, USSTRATCOM.

There Hasn’t been a US Space Command in decades. The Joint war fighting is a CCMD responsibility, currently under USSTRATCOM in the UCP. My Unit is STRATCOM’s Joint Force Space Component Command. We have NO service components. USSTRATCOM does, including AFSPC, SMDC/ARSTRAT, FLTCYBERCOM, oh and MARFORSTRAT too.

Now the future is yet to be determined, but they want to elevate us to be a Unified Combatant Command soon. That’s agnostic of whether Congress changes Title X, USC to create a Space Force (not in the prerogative of the Executive Branch BTW, see the Constitution)

Marines don’t have parts to fly helicopters or planes. Army is in need of upgraded supplies Soo where’s the money coming from???? Just another waste if taxpayers money brought to you by a President that thinks nothing of our military.

MAJ (Join to see) - I think that you misunderstand my statement. What I mean is that we already have units that deal with space. I have mentioned on other threads that I believe that a Space Force is just a fine idea and that it is being blown out of proportion just because it is being focused on under this administration. Efforts to build and maintain a defensive presence in space have been at least planned out if not actually worked towards for decades now. Perhaps the next time that you want to jump on a guy's case you can ask for elaboration before immediately jumping to acting an ass - just one "armchair" generals opinion, major.

MAJ (Join to see) - As in it changes nothing. There has been a push for a space presence for a while. Just because POTUS has been vocal about it does not mean that it was some random brain child of his.
