What's your opinion when a National Guard soldier or reservist wears an active duty unit patch because they were attached ?

Do they have orders authorizing them to wear it? If they do, I don't see a problem with it.

Information for the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) and Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, Former Wartime Service (SSI-FWTS) can be found in AR 670-1, Chapter 21, para 21-16, and 21-17. They're long paragraphs, but very informative as far as this topic goes.

I would say if the reservest or NG soldier was on orders to active duty he Is just like every other active duty person, With orders to a unit and doing a job their he is a member of that unit for that time assighned just like everyother soldiier in the unit. I did that for over 6 years during RVN.When it was over I was retuned to the state(NG)

When attached they did earn the right to wear it. They did combat under that command and at the point of attachment they are under title 10 orders.

Now you have to wear the patch that organic to your unit unless you deploy smaller than a company. If your Battalion is attached to the 82nd you don't get the 82nd patch now. You only get your own patch.

I was national guard and was attached to 101st I am authorized to wear the screaming eagle patch as my combat patch. While I was there they changed over to 25th ID. I am also authorized to wear that patch.

I have 5 combat patches I am authorized to wear. All from one tour in Iraq. You know why I have so many? Because AD guys rotated in and out and I spent almost 14 months in country. So while my wife was planning our divorce, us NG guys were getting passed around to different units. I earned every patch I got. While the BN was living it up at BIOP I was working out of FOBs/COBs and shitting in barrels. So yes, I deserve to wear my AD patches, but I only wear one, the 2ACR (Even as an MP I got my Spurs with them.)

I had just looked and found all my stuff, I was in a guard unit in 06-07 and we were authorized at the time quite a few different patches, but it always surprised some older CSM that had the Tarrot leaf (24th infantry division) when they would see a older spc walk by with the tarro leaf on their right sleeve.

I may be biased because I'm a National Guardsman, but I don't see the issue. During the period of service for which the patch is authorized, the national guardsman/reservist and the active duty soldier are both on federal active duty.

I think it really reflects on who you deploy with. If you go with your BCT you should wear that patch. If the regional command was the 10th MTN that shouldn't mean that you should get that patch. So many don't like their unit patch. I have seen it when I deployed.

As long as they are authorized to do so, it is fine. In my case, I was attached to 4th BCT, 10th MTN, 3rd BCT, 82nd ABN, and 3rd ID in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have proudly worn all three patches on my right sleeve and the CSIB on my ASUs. For those assignments, I was an individual augmentee so was not part of an attached unit. I had actual orders attaching me.

If it's authorized what's the issue? Personal feelings aside, regulations are regulations.

As as DS, I once had a General tell me, "Drill, you're poll vaulting over fly shit". I think that goes the same for this thread!!

What is the issue? If the patch is authorized it is no different than an AC Soldier wearing the patch of a unit they are attached to.

I've been deployed both active duty and National Guard. Saw more direction action as a Guardsmen "attached" to 5th Group in the first three days than 9 months with the 82nd on active duty. I still wear them both. And the 10th Mountain. And 218th SEP AR BDE (South Carolina) And 45th IN Division (OKARNG). AND 11th ACR. Can't help than my Afghan infantry company was farmed out all over the 'Stan. Sorry you where stuck with one unit MSG

Exactly my point, units are attached all of the time as long as the attachment is authorized so the patch should be as well.
218th huh!? I am a Kansas Guardsman, my old IN BN out of KSARNG (2-137) used to fall under the 218th out of SC. We deployed to OIF wearing the 218th patch but we're given the 3rd and 4th ID patch as SSI-FWTS. My company was assigned as PSD to MNF-I (05-06) running the Joint Visitors Bureau.

Is this really an issue? There have been Soldiers assigned to Marine units (who do not wear assignment patches) who wear Marine unit patches (like 1st Mar Div, etc). I called out a few Soldiers prior to 9-11 who had Marine patches on their right sleeves. At that time it was not authorized. Been out for a bit, but if memory serves me, are you not to wear the patch from the lowest echelon you were assigned to during a combat deployment? I'm actually authorized 4 different patches, but chose the AC brigade (12th CAB) because the other brigade we fell in under initially, was a hot mess. (36th CAB).
So I say to you, if the Soldier is authorized, does it really matter? Does it affect your pay or does it hurt your feelings?

Your responses are clearly from a woman who has ......control issues. Did that come with your rank? Maybe you should untwist your panties ,and I don't wear fruit of the looms. Sergeant Major.

Sorry Jim, but your responses sound like they come from someone who has issues with a woman who earned a higher rank than he did. Good luck with retirement.

SFC Jim Mergott - See, I hear where you're coming from on the 82d thing, but what you may not know is, at least in my experience as being an ARNG MP squad leader whose platoon was OPCON'ed to an infantry BN in the 82d during OIF-1 is they were actually VERY appreciative of us. We had vehicles, women and a LOT of firepower, which was something a light infantry company did not, in comparison. Before anyone goes emailing SHARP complaints to that female 1SG who made the news earlier this year, the women were useful for searching female Iraqis...So anyway, when they cut us memo's verifying our service and awarded us our 82d combat patches(SSI-FWTS), they WANTED us to wear them. To this BN(1/325th), the further their patch got outside the footprint of Ft. Bragg, the better. Even to a platoon of "dirty, Nasty guard legs." Cheers and Happy New Year!

I deployed to Iraq with 56 SBCT. PAARNG.We used women medics we had from a headquarters unit to search Iraqi women. They came in handy for this.
