Vet orgs
I am in the exploratory phase of forming a 501c3 to serve Veterans and/or families of veterans in ways that are either unavailable or insufficiently available now. What programs or services would you like to see? Feel free to think outside the box.

A lot of veterans are motorcycle riders. Some of them can no longer ride due to injuries such as missing limbs. I think it would be awesome if there was a charity who could help convert their existing bikes into trikes or get the veteran a new trike.

I know that if I ever had to stop riding my Harley Road King, I'd get a trike just so I could continue to get the wind in my face and continue the feel of the rumble of a Harley Davidson.

I agree, I often question the financial integrity of some of these entities. The funding and also alterior motives of some individuals within these organizations really are questionable. There are so many programs that slap on a title including the word "vets" and greatly benefit from that title. I just want these organizations to be honest and upfront. That is all.

My biggest issue when I came home was making my home handicap ready

Great idea, CPT Bruce Rodgers! That requires major and pricey remodeling, and I could see this being a huge burden for many. Great place for a foundation to step in with sponsorship.

That is part of my purpose here, the VA has a million programs, but they are all so bogged down in bureaucracy, that they may as well not even exist for many.

What services/programs would you like to see available to veterans and/or their families?

simple housing for those who are desperately in need. I feel since theres a war on everything might as well be a war on homelessness and some way to get our vets off the streets.

There is an organization in Portland Oregon that received $6 million from the VA to end homelessness and yet they still have homeless vets in one of their shelters.

A local guy who is a Vietnam Vet who was putting together a plan on his own has had to fight the local government to start his it. He wants to end homelessness. He was going to build tiny homes on 2 acres of land with a garden and a community center. The center would have a laundry facility and offices so they could get access to resources such as counseling, etc.

and how well did that go? and doesnt it arouse curiosity as to why its not like that in all states? and I wonder how much of the money actually goes towards the cause? I feel that that guy had a good idea with how he wants to use the land and I could also see how that place could be a micro resourse based economy so as to give them a new mission again....a better goal or to serve again within that community in ways in which everyone benefits . sorry if im long winded. I feel passionate about the subject.

I really like the idea of the small houses. We veterans need to get together and do these things for each other, just as we shared the trials of the military so we should share the trials of civilian life. Three words that should ever be in a sentence together with the word veteran are homeless, hungry, unemployed. Just my opinion.

I would pool their resources. Look at the CFC book and work to combine the efforts of all the Veteran focus organizations. That would have a greater impact than the 3 pages of orgs asking for your donations.

I have heard (but do not have first hand knowledge) it is difficult to run non-profits in this space because of all the competition for donations/funding. Have you experienced that?

I've volunteered with a few of them. .I still do for one....
Team RWB is open to everyone, Active, Reserve, Vets, families, civilians. It's probably the best organization I've volunteered with.....

Finding volunteers and getting donations are definitely two of the biggest aspects of running a non-profit.
