People worry over the Mexican border, when Canada has more land contact with America, easily. The size of our Nation is such that controlling the border is not plausible.

There needs to be a solution for what happens once they get here and what it is they are trying to do here. Whether its seeking asylum, looking for work, or here to conduct gang related activities; there needs to be a clear and concise law pertaining to it. Right now, its held and deported. But in some instances, we should be helping those looking for refuge.

Whatever the case. Patrolling the borders is basically impossible.

I would agree with PFC Harris except for a couple of things: 1. There aren't enough rich in numbers to make much difference. 2. Those with a lot of money have more legal tax dodges than the rest of us so they don't get taxed. 3. Those with money provide money to people getting elected so although it may be illegal they seem to see a benefit in giving because at some point it benefits them? The poor people don't usually create jobs while the rich do. It's not a problem that can easily be corrected. I do recall however that way back when congresspeople rode public transportation to and from Congress. Now, they ride in cars owned by the Government and driven by government employees. Something's wrong there.

MAJ (Join to see) Unfortunately, what you described, is exactly what eventually happened when Europeans first landed on our shores. They then proceeded to divide the land amongst themselves and fight over it, even though there was already Native Americans living within that land for, God knows how long.

MAJ Keith Young If that's how I came across, thhen I guess it's kind of correct. The point I was trying to make is that, it is impracticle to stop them from crossing the border. We just need clear guidance as to what we should be doing with them, once they get here and try to integrate into our society.

First and foremost, should be English. Anyone intending to live and work within our borders should have to know how to read, write, and speak English. It's not because I speak English, but rather: ALL of the SIGNS in America are in English. ALL OF THEM. Billboards, Roadway Signs, Emergency Signs, etc. You name it, it is written in English. There may be spanish written on fine things, like a Fire Extinguisher... but for the most part, all pertent information is in English.

That is true, SSgt Brycen Shumway. And there's no doubt that what happened there (and in many other parts of the world, throughout history) was a disgrace. But just because it's happened before doesn't mean we have to lie down and let it happen again.

I think we have enough laws but they are not being enforced. So to start they should enforce what's on the books. When people think of illegals they only think of those who cross the southern border. But 50% of the illegals are here in the U.S. on expired visas. The United States only tracks the visas coming in we do not track what leaves. That is something that needs to be fixed also. So if we enforce existing laws and control the visas better we could get a better handle on Americas immigration problem.

There's no real desire to control our southern borders. It's a constant flow of cheap labor. As long as there are jobs, there will be people coming across to work them. Furthermore, our drug war has created a war zone in south america. So you have the pull of jobs and the push of people fleeing violence. If the choice is risking a border crossing vs dealing with upwards of 10% homicide rates in some areas, it's a pretty easy choice.

One of my closest friends is a Border Patrol agent in Arizona. The amount of people he sees skipping across the border is astounding. He is talking about hundreds per day, just what he sees. The entire force is undermanned, under gunned, and under funded to use technology like drones and fencing.

I asked him once what would begin to curb the problem. His response was a few thousand military sharpshooters along the border with no bag limit and lethal force. I happen to agree with his experience even though there is no political way it will ever happen.

What we did to control the border between East & West Germany up until 1990 worked pretty well.

I believe that border worked to keep people in Communist Germany from escaping. If I used that analogy to refer to our N or S border that would make me wonder how many American's want to escape? lol

SGT James Hastings Think from the other side of the fence...it would be to keep people from escaping INTO the US.

I would agree. If the standard of living and the lack of opportunities were reversed I bet there would be a lot of Americans sneaking into Mexico or maybe Canada? lol

The easiest way to control our borders would be to just expand our territory till we run out of land. Then everybody is inside the border and all we'd have to do, is watch for rafts. Manifest Destiny and all that.

I don't really have a serious answer except to perhaps actually enforce the laws already on the books.

Disagree. President Bush sent 3000 NG troops to assist the border patrol back in 2006. The extension of that mission is still going on today, but it's down to about 300 and (my understanding) those soldiers are mostly aviation and support types to provide capabilities like FLIR, etc.

What exactly would you suggest the National Guard do and why the National Guard instead of just hiring more people?

If there is a NEED for the National Guard, by all means, those soldiers are willing (some more than others) to leave their full-time jobs and answer the call, but unless there is a need for their skills, equipment, or such it's a waste of resources and doing an impact on soldiers when it's not needed.

Now, as I mentioned elsewhere, if you want to create volunteer active duty positions for reserve component soldiers to volunteer for, you're going to get a LOT of people applying for those positions.

It still comes down to a one question - What are they going to do? During Operation Jump Start (the original mission), the soldiers were filling support positions on a short-term basis until the Border Patrol was able hire individuals to do those tasks. This freed up more BP personnel to actually do enforcement on the border. Now, if they still don't have those positions filled 12 years later, then there is a political or funding problem that needs to be address (remember, using the National Guard soldiers is not free, so who pays .. just add it to the debt?)

I have crossed the border 10 or so times.First as a 15 year old runaway with a retired air force sergeant. I think they need to be opened up. Put a large filter system in place to clean up whom ever come threw.
