For an initial suit, a navy 2-button or 3-button suit (depending on your build) with notched lapels works for every occasion (at the office, a party, a funeral, a wedding, etc.).

From there, it's all about your tastes. Branch out to different colors (medium/light blues, dark/medium/light grays, brown/taupe/tan, etc.), different patterns (pinstripes, plaid, windowpane, check, birdseye, etc.), different cuts (slim, athletic, classic), different vents (center, side, unvented), different lapels (peak, narrow, wide, etc.), etc.

If you can only own one, a navy blue classic cut business suit (can also use the jacket separately with khakis or other pants). If you can afford a few more, a black or charcoal one and a summer suit (linen).

What suit style(s) should every man own?

I am not sure about style, but I have three suits: a navy blue light pin stripe, a light brown suit, and a full navy blue suit.

Unless you're talking about a Zoot Suit. In that case, I don't have the appropriate hat or wing tipped shoes and suspenders.

It's all part of the suit. Why so much navy blue?

SGT (Join to see) - I bought the first two suits above several years ago and was completely satisfied, and I am still satisfied with the purchase. Someone talked me into buying the full navy suit for a job interview that didn't pan out a couple years later.

I understand that navy is worn in the winter and light brown or lighter colors are worn in the summer. Ties bring everything together.
