Folded flag
This morning I got to sleep in until 0830 and when I went outside for my morning breath of fresh air I head something different than I had heard any other day. While I am used to hearing the rifle fire from the range I live close to they added something new to me this morning, I got to hear the National Anthem. Automatic reaction was to stand an salute drawing strange looks from the only other individual outside at that time, he is not a veteran and asked me what I was doing.

Understanding his confusion I offered this explanation; "Rendering honors to those who founded this country, those who have and are serving this country, and remembering those who have died protecting this country.

Silence. It was a good morning. I actually get up a little earlier than necessary every day so that I can enjoy that sound. Silence. My quiet time ...

The call of the bladder. Yes, I've reached the age of understanding and I now understand what is meant by "the wee hours of the morning..."

I truly and honestly hope it was only a dream. That is not something I would want to hear first thing. Stay safe.

This morning the first thing I heard was the ticking of my watch. I was exhausted yesterday and went to bed with back spasms. I was scheduled to serve as usher captain at my church [requirement every Sunday for 1st service] and had asked the Lord if I should go this morning or stay home and rest. I also wanted to wake up quietly and not disturb my wife. I woke up well before the alarm went off and lay in bed collecting my thoughts and praising God and got up quietly and took my morning medications, got dressed and generally prepared to get ready to go to church.

My daughters were watching cartoons with the volume up just a few notches too high. I went in to the living room intending to ask them to turn it down and then go back to sleep, but... I just piled on the floor with them and watched their silly cartoon with them. Seemed to work out a bit better that way.

I am normally having my first cup of coffee when the sound of reveille goes off. Not sure about others, but I love hearing reveille and taps everyday. Had a friend visit and ask what was the music (taps was going off) and I said something along the same lines. At first I responded with the automatic response that is drilled into us but then I realized that it means something different to a civilian than it means to us. I think my frank candor kind of threw her off but it is always nice to be reminded of the things we have and those that don't.
