I never got drafted as I had already enlisted in the Air Force at age 18. I graduated from High School in June of 1966, enlisted in July and in August went to Basic training at Lackland AFB, TX. During the month of July prior to laving for Lackland AFB and basic I attended a Civil Air Patrol Summer encampment at Otis AFB, MA as a CAP Cadet 1st Lt.

Well since I enlisted in 71 I never received a draft notice. I would have never received a draft notice under the lottery system that was started I was so far down the line.

The draft was ended just prior to my 18th birthday. But I remember the angst of my brother-in-law receiving his. He reported to Induction Center and we did not know if he was coming back or going to BCT. My sister was scared.

When my Mom checked the mail and it was there I was already at MEPPS raising my hand for USAF...I've chuckled about that ever since.
