I love the wall in DC. Feels like you are walking on holy ground. I have seen numerous make shift, temporary, unit or event specific memorials for our fallen in these two wars. Is there a project in the making for a more permanent, all inclusive design
What would you like to see? A wall or something else?
I'd love to see some brainstorming and maybe even some personal stories on here from those who have lost a friend/family member to these wars.
Also should it be a combined memorial or one for each war?

There's memorial for every actual war our country has participated in, more recently, Korean War. Since Civil War, until selective service became obsolete, our men had no choice as to whether they should enlist, yet so many more did rather than go to prison or flee to another country. Those brave souls deserve something to show their patriotism. Not aware when selective service ceased to be, but we owe it to those who served even though they didn't have to to honor period in which they served.

I googled this: "The existing draft law was expiring at the end of June 1971, but the Department of Defense and Nixon administration decided the draft needed to continue for at least some time. In February 1971, the administration requested of Congress a two-year extension of the draft, to June 1973." President Nixon stated he would end the Draft while he was in office.

PO1 Rennae Rosenberg thx for intel. Knew draft ended, just feared losing page to google when it ended. All the more reason OEI & OEF veterans deserve memorial. Only career members of our forces may have been involved 'cause they HAD to serve, but anyone who enlisted DURING those "conflicts" did so 'cause they wanted to. Really, shows we've raised some true patriots.

Hopefully a wall of the names of the neocons who were responsible, with a guillotine next to it. A working one.

Yes there is as a matter of fact. Having just visited there, the Smithsonian is placing the National Museum of African American History and Culture right next to the Washington Monument in front of the White House to be completed by 2016. There is plenty of territory to build other monuments in DC and the shores of the river.

http://nmaahc.si.edu/

Once you go the link, the concept drawing and information regarding the Museum is there, the main structure is built and unlike the link states of 2015, it is actually 2016.

I gotta say that WA,DC is an Awesome place. There are FREE Smithsonian Museums to visit & lots of historical monuments; not to be confused with NYC where you pay big bucks to see any exhibits/museums!

No idea. The Desert Storm Memorial isn’t even complete or open yet so who knows when we will see one for GWOT era.

It’ll be another 10-15 years before I expect anything serious to be decided on.

OEF and OIF need their own holy ground. It should be separate from the wall but equally as important. Those were separate wars fought at different times just as Vietnam was separate and different from WWII. Inclusion is not a proper service to be considered. It wasn't done before so why should it be done now?

It's like stepping on holy ground. I live in a DC suburb and refused to go for several years after it was built because they built it below ground as if we weren't worthy because we didn't win and were scorned by the public. When I finally went, I was truly humbled. A greater monument could not have been built to honor Nam's heroes who didn't make it back. It's a very magical place.
