Received my order to fort hood. What would be a good housing option at fort Hood? How long is the waiting list for on post housing? If the list is long, where would be recommended to live at without too far from base to commute. Thank you

SGT (Join to see) should not take long. I like Commanche Village. Should not take more than week or two. If that. Stay in Coppers Cove on the west side of post.

Comanche Village used to be for SSG and above only, has it changed to all ranks now?

Avoid Walker Village because it has the highest crime rate on Fort Hood, immediately outside the Walker Village gate has even higher crime rate. I recommend Copperas Cove or Harker Heights for off post residence but Harker Heights can be very expensive. Pershing Park is an off posy military housing area that many people like. If you live off post invest in a security system with cameras, motion sensors and alarms. I live in Killeen and my home was burglarized before I got my security system. No problems after ADT installed a security system for us. $50 per month fee for it. Installation was free because they were seeking new customers.

Best bet would be off post around the south or north of copperas cove. Close enough but no post problems. The housing maintenance is having a lot of problems. Another spot is down Clear Creek in the newer housing areas. A lot of military live around that area.

Temple is a nice town and growing in the right places, but it could be a bit of a drive for some, but it’s got a much easier pace than Killeen or HH. I lived in HH when I was stationed at West Ft. Hood and later Ft. Hood and it was nice then. I lived out on Stillhouse and had a nice disconnected feel to it. If I had to do it all over again, I would probably live in Temple. I did the drive from HH to Temple a few years after I ETS’d and it really wasn’t bad in spite of driving my old beat up Dodge Ram 4x4 with big honkin’ tires. Lol. Wasn’t bad at all. 3 years later I moved to Temple and have enjoyed it..for living inside city limits anyway.

I moved from there last year, Pershing Park (one of the housing areas that aren't actually connected to the main post) had a huge number of empty houses to the point that they were going to start letting civilians rent them out.
