Navy's top enlisted leader is wrapping up job title review. Intent is to remove "man" from job titles, such as corpsman, to make them gender neutral. All Air Force members are referred to as "airmen" and three enlisted ranks include "man" in their title. What would you suggest as an alternative to "airman"? (You can have fun with this, but serious alternatives also are appreciated.)

There is not alternative. I mean are they going to change the word woman because it has "man" in it? Airman covers both men and woMEN!

What are we going to do about Mankind, Manual, Manager, Mangrove, and Manatee? But while we are on the subject, what is the First Lady going to be called if a woman is elected, or a homosexual wins?

Some people have way too much time on their hands.

This is becoming ridiculous. What's next? To remove "man" from "human" and "men" from "menstruation"? And then "man" from "woman"? Airman and corpsman are job titles, not gender identifiers. Similarly a manhole is an object, separate from the gender of who might enter. It is however problematic in finding a gender-LGBT-neutral revision to "MAN OVERBOARD!" While trying to figure out the correct call, the whole situation might become moot.

This is all bull capooty. You are what your genitals show, penis- male, vagina- female, not what the stupidity that comes out of your mouth says.

Sgt, that is the plain truth. Particularly from a medical standpoint. I also serve as a firefighter/EMT and when we are dealing with an unconscious victim, we identify them by their 'plumbing" and unless they are taking all of the hormones, etc. medically how we treat a male or a female CAN differ.
The main thing is the administration is going to change, and most likely we will see an end to this nonsense. I was at a DWE last weekend, and the Command HAD to read the US DOD Instruction on Transgenderism as part of GMT. The MOAN from the assembled group (all sailors) was audible!! ( ;-) ) I actually felt bad for the Command Chief. He's just the messenger. In a month and change we can hopefully go back to being a fighting force and not an medium for social engineering.
