Who else is interested in the benefits of 3D printing in the military? The USS Essex has recently been provided a 3D printer and sailors have been encouraged to come up with uses for it. The CNO's Rapid Innovation Cell has been pushing to get this technology in people's hands while it is still young so we'll all be proficient in 10+ years as the technology matures.
What would you make with a 3D printer?

Just don't let the machines become self aware or we're toast!

I am okay with the machines becoming self aware. With all this overpopulation, it is time to thin out the herd. Everyone assumes the next catastrophe will be zombies, earthquakes, or disease, but nobody accounted for self aware, 3-D printers!

Considering the possibilities of owning a 3D printer is truly exhilarating. The prospect of turning digital designs into tangible objects is already a game-changer, but imagine the added innovation of creating custom parts for a DIY. So you can check this https://pos.munbyn.com/munbyn-2-13-electronic-shelf-label/ to get more ways about printer. With the precision and versatility of a 3D printer, designing intricate components for such a device could provide unmatched accuracy and efficiency. It's a testament to how technology can empower us to address practical needs in creative and groundbreaking ways.

PO1 Anderson, great topic! This technology has come a long way in recent years, I can certainly see numerous military applications for this today, as well as in the future. I think it was a good call by the Navy to test this at sea, as I'm sure there's a thousand and one uses for a 3D printer, especially where spare parts are hard to come by. Again, great post thanks for hosting!

I should clarify, I don't think it's done too well away from the pier yet, but it's a start.
Any battlefield will enjoy a massive improvement in logistics with this tech...at sea or shore. Can't wait to see what happens!

My kids had some and I think they looked different from my childhood. Which unit(s) do you want to make? I bet you could find a local 3D printer and make some to sell!

Too many options to name just one.. or even a few! I could see myself becoming almost a hermit just playing with it! Would definitely be something uber-cool to own!

I think the 3d printer will be the new "Napster" of basically stuff. Imagine, you go to a friend house and you see something you like. You scan it, go home, up load it to your 3d printer and bam, you have what you want and you did not have to pay for it. Maybe its more complex than that.

I don't think it is, William. Your comparison is spot on, and we're going to see autocad designs free and available for things like 30 round magazines and other gray market items. There will probably be an iTunes equivalent where you can buy designs, but also plenty of bit torrent like plans floating around.

Did you ever watch Star Trek and yes, I am Trekkie because they had something called a "replicator" and it made food. That's sort of like a 3d printer. A Navy Mess specialist would love this on a commercial level. Just load the materials, push some buttons and you have anything from Indian curry to one of President Obama's favorite dishes, Hawaiian-style pizza that is if he was going to visit and have dinner with Sailors.

Funny you should mention that. I spoke with the guy who created Organovo, a 3D organ printing company (they're currently printing cells for drug company use but moving to organs), and he is creating a company to do 3D printed meat. Finally I can figure out what a tiger steak tastes like...

When I worked at Microsoft in the Mall of America, I had the privilege of messing around with one and seeing what I could come up with. I do have to say, its a nice idea and everyone should have one.

For me, I personally would make key leaders their own sand table kit. Every branch could benefit from having a standard sand table kit. Realistic as possible will help emphasize where things are on the battlefield and when you brief the OPORD to your team, they will have a better picture than using rocks and twigs, which there is nothing wrong with.

Totally understand. These would be pre-made kits. (still have mine I created for OCS). The landmarks and other features would be generic and simple. I see it as giving a more clear picture of a building than using a rock.

But I understand what your saying Ross and agree with you. Was merely giving an example of what it could be used for. Not saying it is a great idea. Would be if executed properly, but we all know things don't always get executed properly

SPC Kotewa has a great point that the simplest method is often the most effective.
HOWEVER, I'd like to add that having a 3D printer on hand in a FOB offers MANY solutions. One solution may be printing army men for the sandbox. Another option could be replacing M4 magazines, lowering the amount needed in supply. It would be stupid to buy one just for a sandbox, but when you have one handy, find as many uses as possible for it!

Really? I force my company to do a sand table every time they do a convoy mission, regardless the "mission." Even on drill weekend and we are just getting some windshield time.
