Also, what do you think when you hear, or hear about, someone else claiming that they are a war hero? You know, the guys who have the long, elaborate war stories that put Hollywood to shame.

Saying that the only heroes are those who gave their lives in combat I'd not true, in my opinion. A platoon leader I served with in Vietnam was awarded two DSCs. I would call him a hero. Volunteered for a nonprofit years ago run by the recipient of the MOH. Would call him a hero. And so on.

I agree, but I doubt either one of them of them would describe themselves as heroes. I’ve known quite a few myself, but non that would admit to it.

First if someone says your a war gero tell them you did what you had to do to live. But then say thank you. Then when you can see someone telling stories and you know they are call them out we earned these stories. Just watch out for rank.

Don’t give a crap about rank anymore, I’m out. This is for a project I’m working on. I know what I’ve said.

Most of the real ones go silent without seeking attention. But now a days the term seems to be tagged to individuals doing their jobs. I believe the media is responsible for this trend along with “everyone gets a trophy” mentality that has made kids entitled and dependable on social media feedback.

I was there to do a job, no more, no less, andI did it to the best of my ability. At the end of the day we all wanted to go "home" safe and chill or blow off some steam...we didn't see ourselves as heros, just regular guys out there fighting for what we believe in.
However, I am very happy to see the respect, and show of love n support for those of us that served in combat, from many of our fellow Americans. The real heros are my brothers n sisters that gave their life in the fight to defend Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Just my take...

In my experience the guys that have really elaborate war stories are just trying to get attention and usually only part of it is true. The guys that actually fall into the hero category rarely talk about it.

To steal a line from the movie, Kelly's Heroes, "A hero is some kind of weird sandwich." If someone claims to be a hero, more often than not they are not! That said, the real heroes are the ones who did not come home. A real hero is one who lives now inside a mangled body and brain wracked by the ravages of war. A hero is one who has put his life on the line for his country and asked for nothing in return. A hero is one who knows that regardless of the job, it was done. In a way, that makes all veterans heroes but none of us would admit to it.
