When are you authorized to wear two of the same ribbon?

When are you authorized to wear two of the same ribbon? I've only seen it one time and it's on the current Sergeant Major of the Army's dress uniform he wears two AAM ribbons.

I think what is even more interesting than him wearing two Army Achievement Medals is the fact that he already has the Army's Distinguished Service Medal, a very high award given to Generals and the SMA after a distinguished tenure as SMA SSG(P) (Join to see). He's a young man, seems to have his act together.

I also have 2 AAM ribbons because I have 20 of them with devices included (3 Silver and 1 bronze oak leaf on the first and 2 bronze on the second).

I wouldn't say they give them away. Hell, I'm a SSG over 10 years, 2 deployments, a trip to Katrina, not a shit bag and have neither an AAM or an ARCOM. I think I'm the only one of my kind in the whole military.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Takes all merit out of the award for others that “may” get one for end of tour. For your unit you probably get a legion of merit for end of tour. Smh

The discussion thread is correct, you are only allowed to wear four accoutrements to each ribbon. Another trivia exception is the Medal of Honor, if you have been awarded two Medals of Honor, you have the option of wearing two ribbons or wearing a "V" device of one.

FYI, there are 19 official double Medal of Honor recipients, last two were Marines during World War I

When I got my Basic Training yearbook, the Superintendent had TEN Meritorious Service Medals, yes you read that right, 10 MSMs. And he wore two ribbons too.

I had never given this any thought. The AAM was still relatively new when I retired. I had a bunch of ARCOMs and more MSMs than AAMs when I retired.

All the regs and requirements answered properly I'd like to add a personal note. At what point is this a leadership issue. Every time DA 638 is filled out you have to include previous awards. Perhaps someone could have noticed that and said maybe it's time for an upgrade for this troop and give him and ARCOM

I wear 2 AAM ribbons because I have been awarded 10. I can post a picture of my ASUs if anybody cares.
You can only have 4 oak leafs on a ribbon hence the need to split if your rack has to be up to date.

I currently have 6 AAMs and a couple of them were downgraded ARCOMs. (want to see a can of worms open up?) I think it is because no one really wants the hassle of sending an award up to the next level like they are so ready to do with UCMJ.
