When going back in as prior service, do I need to disclose any previous disability with VA if I am no longer receiving it?

Cpl Johnny Willis - I went back through MEPS a year ago. I wrote something like "40% VA disability. 0% hearing, 10% tinnitus, 30% PTSD." The provider will have to question you and make a comment regarding any "yes" answers to make sure they are not disqualifying, so I wrote exactly when my VA disability is listed for... less questions that way.

CPT (Join to see) - 30% PTSD .. and they still let you back in? I thought PTSD was a DQ according to MEPS handbook. You got a waiver but what else did you overcome to get in, PTSD isn't something the military shrugs off

Cpl Johnny Willis - I was still enlisted in the National Guard at the time, I had to go back to MEPS to commission. I was DQ'ed at MEPS, it was a long fight afterwards to get approval to commission. I was lucky that I was still enlisted because it helped demonstrate that my mental health history had no effect at all on my performance as a Soldier. It was a bit hypocritical of the Army to continuously say I was deployable at each PHA, but then to try and say I wasn't worthy of a commission. It was a long fight, but it worked out in the end.

CPT (Join to see) - That's awesome, I am glad that everything worked out in the end and I hope that you will stay in for as long as you can to retirement! It was always a goal of mine prior to getting out of the Marines to go back in after I get a degree, but currently do government contracting. I run into many people over here, from enlisted to commissioned and they always ask how is it contracting and they want to do it. Knowing what I know now, I'd say stay in and ride it out. Get that retirement, and then after you have that and VA and then if you so choose to work, you can do contracting. It's good money but that's all it is, fast money. So anyways what I am trying to say is I am glad that things worked out for you, and I hope that I will be able to get back in as well.
