So my wife and I recently went to Washington state for a surgery for her. We were told we would be reimbursed for only what we spent. Do we get the whole amount that we were offered for TDY? Or is it true we ONLY get reimbursed for what we have receipts for?

Non medical attendants are reimbursed for actual expenses with each meal (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) having a maximum reimbursement amount. Check in with patient affairs at your MTF and they should have a info paper with the maximums. Receipts are required for all expenditures that non medical attendants are claiming reimbursement, not just meals.

That is a question for your S1 because nobody here will know all the details of your situation.
