My wife and I went to mass on Christmas Eve, as we sat there I leaned over and whispered in her ear. What are you thinking about right now? She replied "how much I love being in the company of so many happy people celebrating the same thing, what are you thinking about?" My response was somewhere along the line of, what I would do and where we would go if an emergency such a crazed shooter were to occur here tonight. The result of a lingering military mentality? Probably... Do you do this in large gatherings as well?

Predators don't attack other predators if they don't have to. If you make them chose instead of randomly taking a target, simple signs that you are aware of the environment...totally...not just like everyone else in the flock, will let someone know that you are not a good target. I do this all the time. Just looking around and trying to see the other predators in the room will let them know that there's competition and it would be a bad idea to pull their teeth out right now.

Absolutely. Not just in large crowds, but anytime I'm in a public place and not actively focused on something else I tend to think along these lines. What if a shooter came in and starting shooting up the place? What if someone tried to hold up that cashier using a gun? A knife? What would my response be in each situation?

All the time but here is a tip:

Never do this when your family is about to go to sleep. It isn't the time to say if there was a fire... a break in, a earthquake, or something else and expect your family to sleep after that....

I walk into a room and immediately run a threat assessment, seek out the best position to be so that I can see as much of the room and it's occupants as possible. I always sit in a corner facing as many doors and Windows as possible. If only the general population would be aware of their surroundings. There would be A lot less crime and innocent blood would be shed in our country

SFC Woodbury, I was thinking as I read your response about how crowded the corners of various rooms must be if a bunch of Soldiers and Vets are in there at the same time. We all look for the corner! Too funny

I wouldn't be too concerned at church myself...where I attend, I'm pretty sure a large number of the adults over 21 are legally carrying concealed.
