My wife and I went to mass on Christmas Eve, as we sat there I leaned over and whispered in her ear. What are you thinking about right now? She replied "how much I love being in the company of so many happy people celebrating the same thing, what are you thinking about?" My response was somewhere along the line of, what I would do and where we would go if an emergency such a crazed shooter were to occur here tonight. The result of a lingering military mentality? Probably... Do you do this in large gatherings as well?

Situational Awareness, you never know what kind of depressed lunatic may be lingering in the rafters during the Holiday Season with the highest suicide rate. You are good to go, lol.

Yep, I always carry two handguns and that's because everyone else probably has three :)

I sit in booths on the perimeter of rooms so I can see the crowd and the entry/exit points. For years and I means years I couldn't go into the woods.

Constant evaluation. It is situational awareness. Something that we are taught and is refined over years of practice.

Always, I also discuss this a lot in my personal self defense and TX CHL classes that I teach. I will assign my students homework, to go to a mall or other busy area and just sit and think like a bad guy. I tell them to, inconspicuously, watch people and try to determine who they would mug/assault and how they would be able to do it. That way they know what to look for in themselves and change it.

I think it is important for someone to keep a good SA at all times when in a group of friends or family, but not to the point of appearing paranoid. It's great if you ask this topics question to friends and family and they are only thinking of good thoughts, I feel that consuming too much of your thoughts to "escape plans/defensive response", which I am guilty of on several occasions, is a form of the scum of this earth also known as terrorists succeeding on a very small scale. It sounds contradictory to my previous statement but I believe there's no such thing as being too prepared, I'm just saying make sure you take the time to enjoy your freedom and time with your friends and family. Trust in your instincts to take command if needed, note your exits and stay proficient with your sidearm or other self defense.
