I already have my orders for going into basic as an E2, I'm just curious if I should expect a delay due to it. Just wish Covid19 had waited a bit longer so I could have shipped out to basic on schedule. I go in as 25Q, something I've already signed my contract for.

basically instead of getting PFC with 6 months TIG and 12 months TIS, you'll get PFC with 12 months TIG and TIS. So technically you will spend more time as an E2 but you're skipping E1 so you'll make more money. So if you want to look at that as a "delay" you could. Although if you are really high speed and impress your CoC, you can get E3 with 2 months TIG and 6 months TIS with a waiver. I came in as an E3 and made E4 BTZ in 6 months with a waiver.

I appreciate that very much! I know my AIT is supposed to take a total of 30 weeks. So a significant portion of the twelve months TIS and TIG will be in training.

You accrue time from your BASD (Basic active service date) which begins when you ship to basic. You can not advance to the next rank because you currently have no time in grade or time in service

There shouldn't be a delay since getting advanced to PFC from PV2 requires a specific amount of Time in Service and Time in Grade.

(Join to see) - To go from PV2 to PFC, you need 6 months Time in Grade as a PV2 and 12 months Time in Service.

This brings back bad memories. I went in as an E-2. In writing, no stipulations. In the reception center, some civilian said "No, you're and E-1". I said "Then send me home". It didn't work. When I got to my company, I asked my Drill Sgt. about it at the first opportunity. He told me to wait until I got my first LES. Sure enough, paid as an E-2. Drill Sgt. told me to wear the rank. Fast forward to the end of OSUT and graduation. I was called out of formation with several others and I was promoted. To E-2. Too late to do anything about anything at my training company, I was told to take it up with my new unit when I got there. I did. ZERO help. I didn't care about getting promoted to E-3, I was just looking for answers. If that was screwed up, what else in my contract could be.
I know this doesn't really give you an answer, but I just wanted to show you HOW things can get screwed up. 99% of the time, it goes just like SFC Livingston posted.

When someone goes into army basic as an E2, can they expect a delay in being promoted to E3 compared to normal?

No, Time In Grade (TIG) and Time In Service (TIS) count toward your next promotion. Do your job, be mature then promotions will come.

As others have said, to get promoted to E-3 you need Time In Grade but you also need Time In Service. You are going in as an E-2 so realistically you will go through the entirety of your BCT and your AIT as 25Q and likely still have time to go before being in the window to get promoted to E-3.

Don't sweat it. Keep your head down and do your best and you will be fine.

I don't know if it happens like that. What I DO KNOW is that I got delayed in getting promoted due to racial discrimination from my NCO support channel.
