I've never seen anyone wearing ribbons, medals and badges in the manner this guy was wearing them. I think there is a section on the proper wear of awards in civilian attire for Marines in the uniform guide. I am in the airports a lot (100+ times per year) and have never observed someone wearing something like this. Marines don't wear full ribbons and badges and medals together in the manner he is wearing them.

He is asking to get questioned by the way he is wearing them. They should certainly have approached more professionally, allowed him to demonstrate/explain his status etc. Clearly a mistake but both parties could demonstrate better judgment.

Not sure if you are taking to me but I don't know a damned thing about AR670-1 and wouldn't burn a brain cell trying to either.

Sgt Gus Laskaris . Clearly the encounter went too far. I wear a EGA lapel pin on my suit jackets but could not "prove" my veteran status as I don't have a VA card and don't carry a DD214 with me. In 30 years I have never had anyone question me in an airport or restaurant etc.

I think if you are going to wear awards and decorations there should be a real effort to wear them correctly, not perfectly. It is too easy to do it right these days. There are companies on line that can produce a proper ribbon/medal/mini-medal display, correct precedent etc. if you know what awards you need.

Sgt Gus Laskaris When I look at my uniforms they laugh at me. We both know it will not happen.

2LT Tom Waters . Tom, I have plenty of experience with older veterans. My family and friends circle is chocked full of Veterans going back to the trenches in France in WWI. You shouldn't be so presumptuous.

I would agree that older veterans in veterans homes likely have little access to things that can help them get it right nor are they inclined to as they are, in many cases, very aged.

My point was he has, what appears to be a correct ribbon rack. Then he pins on purple hearts (even though he has the ribbon on) and then a cover emblem on his lapel. He was inviting a challenge. I agree, the questioning/challenge went too far.

No it should not have happened. It's an isolated incident. It's one of those, "I wish I was there to hear everything", situations! Again, "an isolated incident gone wrong"!

It's really not that isolated. Things like this have been happening a lot. Too many people want to be the one to tear somebody apart for Stolen Valor, and make a mistake just like this.

I agree, but usually there are tell tale signs like claiming to be SF or seals or something. A conversation usually out them and I just let them mess themselves up. Then I shake my head and walk away

There was a guy at boot camp who after battle stations(just about to graduate), bought patches at the nex, impersonated a THU in holds, and went to the nex on the non-recruit side and bought some bang energy drinks. Got caught walking back by his chief. Got setback to 4/4 in training I believe, and did it again a few weeks later, caught again and was sent to separations. He tried fighting his case really hard, I’m not sure what ended up happening however. Stolen Valor takes many forms.

Where is your fucking ID. Never go in public claiming military affiliation without a DOD ID like you were trained. And this bs would never happen. Even veterans have IDs. Get one or being mistaken for a liar is your fault. If you are challenged and can’t provide proof of service then that’s on you. If you get caught on base without an ID your ass gets cuffed and thrown in a cell. So why should I let you slide out in town claiming military affiliation with no proof. If your mistaken for stolen valor then it’s your fault. If someone were to walk up to me and challenge my service I would immediately flash them with 4 different government ids and a concealed carry permit then tell them to fuck off. If they continued to bash me I would shoot them in self defense then call the police and tell them I did it. There’s no mistaking my military affiliation there.
