I want to train my soldiers with more visual aids than the ones that I have and then get hands on while conducting patrolling an route clearance.

The Army Center for lessons learned website would be a good place to look but I pose a few questions. All training should be nested with Army doctrine. Do you have a task number with what your training? If not you should go to the central army registry website on the army training Network and do a search for what you are trying to train. The Army is pulling away from coin and we are trying to train on large scale operations. If you are trying to train on a generic task using a dated PowerPoint you may be trending on something that we have done in the past that we may not do in the future.

Hello SSG,
I am sorry for the late response. From a trailblazer as they called us back in ‘04. We were at FOB Warhorse attached to the 1st ID under Col. Petard at that time. First thing I will tell you as I did other leaders that ask similar questions is trust your intuition and your troops. It is doesn’t look right or feel right it is probably an IED. Remembering OPSEC I will say they adapted well from simple sets to complex sets hence the rhino setup on our patrol vics. What I will suggest is without allowing your troops to see, set up an area with indicators such as an old cellphone antenna or a cut of fine copper wire. Then setup a scan point about 5-10 meters away that they can view the area and look for those indicators amongst the landscape. I will say this, it took time and yes we lost troops and had wounded but with time it came to a point where it felt like we could see if a single pebble was moved on the side of the road. Give your troops time to learn and every now and then set something out random to see if it is noticed. This will build a sense of alertness but also be a connection builder between you and your troops. Because someday you may hear the words, it was SSG game of can you notice what’s out of place that today saved my life.

Get out in the field area and train. If you have someone or know anyone who has deployed to afghan or Iraq, could be very useful. You use to be able to go to a warehouse and sign out dummy aids if still around hit them up. Everything you could ever need is right there

After Vietnam, the Army sent me to a short school for CBR as I became the Company CBR NCO. CBR was then and I suspect now a very boring topic. I used to get my visual aids from Playboy Magazine to keep the interest of the men in My Company. True.
