Married 25U with a 4 month old. Been stationed at Fort Hood for 4 years, need help deciding on where to go next. Options are Alaska, Korea, Leonardwood, Campbell, Riley or stabilize here. I like my unit/ section because I actually do my job and learn more compared to my last unit, leadership and opportunities are great and I want to continue to be as efficient as I can. But the surrounding area isn’t a place we’d like to live in any longer. Looking for general info on my choices, pros and cons, pros and cons relating to my MOS at these stations, housing info, etc. I appreciate it!

Campbell. Housing is decent, you can buy in the surrounding area for not that much. An hour from Nashville, schools are decent, optempo is pretty fast but you will learn more like that. Plus, airborne is an outdated concept and air assault is the way to go! SCREEECH!

I would ask for Japan, Germany, and Hunter Army Airfield.

Campbell, Alaska, and Carson are always very popular and people who have been stationed there absolutely love those places.

Don't stabilize where you are it. You only get 18 months of stabilization but you reenlist for 3 years. The Army will usually put you on assignment with a report date the month after your stabilization ends, so you only get 18 more months where you're at before the Army picks your next duty station. But if you pick the duty station you'll get 2-3 years there and you can usually reenlist for your next duty station of choice after that.

Tried asking for Germany again, but EFMP reasons are keeping my options limited to these. Thank you!

SGT (Join to see) oh you didn't mention EFMP. That might also strike out Alaska for you. It's not uncommon for an EFMP request to come back with a counter offer that EFMP is unable support as well. I know, it's a flawed system.

In that case, I suggest Hawaii, Carson, Campbell, Hunter, and Bragg.

SFC (Join to see) I should’ve mentioned that in the beginning. But also the list that I provided in my post is the actual list I was given by retention based off of EFMP. I really wanted Carson as well but that didn’t work out unfortunately.

SGT (Join to see) I know, based on your initial request those were the counter offers that strength management provided, not the ones that EFMP section provided. If you pick one it still has to go to EFMP branch and might get denied. EFMP branch only checks the locations you're requesting not all locations. You're not limited to accepting those spots offered to you, you can send up another request for a different location.

Just to be clear, the spots you were offered are not cleared by EFMP. That list is not a list of places that will accept your EFMP and there is no way to get a list like that.

So, go request some other spots, if you're EFMP you can request up to three locations at a time.

Alaska! We were stationed in Alaska at Elmendorf AFB, near Anchorage, for 4 years. Loved it. All three of our kids loved it. My son moved back to AK after high school and lives there today. It looks like you're both in communications or IT. Should be able to get assigned to an Army installation or unit in AK. In order of preference ask for: Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, Ft Wainwright (Fairbanks), Ft Greeley, any other Army installation.

The Army in AK does go to the field year around, so you might be in for some "cold weather camping." This is offset by the opportunities that AK offers for recreation. Doubtlessly the best scenery in North America. Excellent opportunities for hunting, camping, fishing, winter sports. Unique life style associated with very long days in summer and long nights in winter. Weather is milder in Anchorage. Fairbanks is warmer in summer and colder in winter.
