Which US military branch has the best military police? Why? Is there a military-wide annual competition to find out? If so, what is it? If not, should there be? Why or why not?

I certainly agree, I had a lot of positive experiences dealing with Army MPs . I had spent the 1968 and early 1969 time period in Viet Nam working mostly with the 366th SPS at Da Nang and for 3 months prior to that with the 12th SPS at Cam Ranh Bay. While I was at Hickham AFB, HI we patrolled Ft. Kam which was inside the Hickam Gate but the Army MPs from Fort Shafter had primary jurisdiction and sent a patrol from Fort Shafter to pass through a couple times each 8 hour shift. We passed through a lot more as We were closer but on incidents would respond and hold onto things then Shafter would send out Army MPs to take over the scene from us then We would either remain and help them or leave depending on what the MPs needed. In any event it always worked well and those MPs earned My respect and they gave it as well. Most My experience working with Marine MPs was 1st MP BN, at Da Nang, also a bunch of great guys and another outstanding unit.

As a former USAF SP (6911th ESS, 50th SPS, 90 MSS) and Army air crew I have to say USAF SP/SF are the best all around. I was at Ft Dix on 9/11 getting ready to deploy to Bosnia. The Army didn't have the manpower or resources to secure the post but the USAF at Maguire AFB had our back and and had the perimeter locked down and secured in no time.

The US Army's Lance Missile System had both nuclear and conventional weapons capabilities. When we had a major field duty, instead of the average 3_day shoot-n-scoot, we always had MP's augmenting us for the controlled access to the nuclear warhead areas. If we mounted a nuke on a missile and assigned it to a fire team, a squad of MP's went out on the launcher. All of the MP's I worked with were professional at their assigned duties, however they did express feelings that they would rather be on the LEO side of the business. Any encounters with MP/SP/SF from other branches, all were proficient and professional in their duties. I'm gonna buck the system and go against my branch, but I would say the AF Security Forces were the most BAMF's I encountered. They were excelling at the LEO skills, and also had the heavy hitters (SWAT type and special operators). If it was my families life that had to depend on Military Police, I would prefer the AF over other branches simply because they had more specialized training. Now here is the caveat......I got out after Desert Storm (early 90's for you young'uns). Since then, the mission has changed somewhat, as has training, and MTOE equipment. Todays forces are tasked much differently, so this old farts opinion is a bit dated. My recent (past 15 years) experience with military police is, Tinker AF Base in OKC-base is still patrolled by, and gate guard posts are manned by AF SP/SF. And Ft Sill, OK which is now patrolled by, and gates are manned by the Ft Sill Police Dept (civilians). When the base is on restricted access, they to (rotate) soldiers for ID checks, etc. The MP's there do more babysitting than LEO work.

Ps. The Lance Missile System was phased out and gone in early 90's as welln The original MLRS. started out with Lance Missiles, and a few years after fielding the MLRS, is when the 2 fields split into different MOS's.

I've worked with army air force and navy and honestly there's no contest, with the adapt and overcome mentality and the superior professionalism that we didn't even know we had. 58's in real world environments are the best.
A competition would be pointless. Everyone's going to be on their best behavior, making sure they do it by the book and it's going to turn into a dick measuring contest. You can't find out who is more effective that way.

Being as it is the Military and being that I am an MP I think that we all do the same job as Mp's. SF's is a combination of different things. They are not Classified as Law and Order but they do that Job. The Air Force peeps, if I am wrong please enlighten me because I do not know what that it is you all do.

I was a K9 SP (not SF) from 94-99. I was Law Enforcement and primarily did police patrol. In 97 the AF got a hair up their assets and combined the Law Enforcement with Physical Security and changed 2 Career Fields (MOS) into Security Forces. At that point, I was placed on Gates and Flight line patrol due to being an E4, regardless of my knowledge of my 3 years of LE Patrol. The mission now is essentially the same as it was then, but providing more Physical Security at high value asset bases CONUS and OCONUS, and Base Defense missions and Combat Patrols in remote and deployed locations. The AF also has very good SRT (SWAT) Teams, Personal Security Details, and the Raven Program. Over all, the Security Forces covers a wide variety of missions just as the Army MP's. Also, don't let what appears to look like dysfunction fool you either, sometimes they may look like they are clueless or hate each other, but they don't get to actually do their job very often, and will have each others backs quickly and violently. I am now a Medical NCO for an Army MP Company, and learning the ropes with a primary mission of Convoy Security. Every unit will differ from others, just as each service will differ.

Most My time in the Air Force was spent working Law Enforcement with jobs such as Base Police Patrolman, Patrol Supervisor, Desk Sergeant, Flight chief(shift Supervisor) Investigations section before moving up to more advanced positions. Security is an entire separate job area worked by others, not the Law Enforcement people. There may be other jobs that can be added as a mission requires. i have found on some instances when Army Guard MPs came to work with us they enjoyed the Law Enforcement as they rarely go to do that function but I'm sure that also depends on the unit and its function.
