Which historic military sites have been the most memorable for you?

Arlington National Cemetery and the many American military cemeteries in France and other European nations.

Camp Curahee, A Shau Valley, South Vietnam

I had the honor of visiting the US cemetary at Flanders Field on the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1. It was humbling. I also walked the preserved trenches, visited the British Cemetary and the bunkers where the famous poem was written. But nothing compared to looking out on that particular garden of stones on that particular day near sunset. I was surprisingly alone there and knew that I was in the shadow of great sacrifice and service more so than at any other site I have visited.

Been to many of our Civil War sites and walked the battlefields. But my favorite place is Point du Hoc where the Rangers scaled the cliffs. To stand on the beach and look up is take your breathe away...and still they climbed under fire.

Arlington National Cemetery. Located on Robert E. Lee’s property it’s a literal walk through a who’s who of American military history.

Omaha Beach, that hill was a killer to climb using the paved trail; can't imagine fighting up it under withering fire. The cemetery overlooking the beach is sobering to think of the amount of men who died during the campaign.

My favorite site was Trinity, where the first Atom bomb was tested. It sounds bizzare, but it ,akes you feel small knowing all the work that went into making the Manhattan Project a reality. So many people working in absolute secretcy, billions of dollars spent doing so, and today the peacefulness of the place where mans greatest power was unleashed. It's a once a year tour for almost 50 people.

One of my favorites has been the Battle of Novara in Italy - a great disaster for the Piedmont-Sardinian forces and an end to the 1848 War with Austria. It is both hidden because of the defeat - and view-able because some historians did a great job in placing the key battle markers .

Two battlefields were memorable for me...Antietam and Gettysburg. So many men lost or injured.
