I have been in the south (mostly lousianna) my entire career. I want an OCONUS duty assignment, but due to my daughter being here in the states and never being able to see her I dont want to go to the other side of the world. Not to mention Hawaii is a nice place to be.

Wow, I just put it a COT and my branch manager approve it. People like me take it for granted being in Hawaii until we leave. I hope anyone that never got station in Hawaii get it in the future because it is unlike any duty station I ever been.

At the end of A-School they gave me my first "Wish List". After Orlando and Pensacola I had fallen in love with Florida and wanted to stay there. I thought I would be slick and put Hawaii as my first pick and Florida as second and third. I went to Hawaii.

SFC Welch,
No luck with Hawaii as of yet. But I am certainly not giving up either. I spent a month there after they rebuilt my foot and I have been trying to get back every since.

SFC Perry,
My wife and I did a delayed honeymoon last year at the Hale Koa. Ever since that moment, my new mission has been to get back. Not all that many Reserve 05 slots, but I'm gonna find me one!

LTC Stoneking,
We stayed at the Hale Koa as well. What a terrible ace that was to recover. My wife rolled me down to the pool one day for the poolside massage.

MAJ (Join to see) Sure would be cool to go back at some point. I enjoyed the first week. After that, I was on so many drugs it wasn’t much fun. My wife parked me (in my rented wheelchair) in front of a store while she looked around. While I was sitting in front, drooling on myself, Dog the bounty hunter guy walked up and said hello.

I spent 14 years of Active Duty trying to get to Hawaii before I landed that assignment. Timing is everything. There has to be a vacate position and you have to be in the window to move.
I liked Hawaii so much that I applied for an in place consecutive overseas tour (IPCOT). My first one was shot down. A few months later a DISA PAC position opened up and fell into my lap. Again, timing is everything.
Work with your assignment officer, but don't push too hard. A few well placed hints may work better than daily pestering.

One other thought - family restricted tours (Korea, Kuwait) used to have the advance return assignment (Home Advanced Assignment Program?) where you could request a certain duty station upon your return and the Army would consider it if it met the needs of the Army. You might try that route.

Sounds like a call to your branch manager may be in order. That should provide you with the most realistic answer possible.

A friend of mine is stationed there and has been there going on 5 years. Another friend retired in Hawaii. (#1 complaint, cost of living)

Hawaii is so beautiful. Stationed at Fort Shafter and Derussy for three years. Loved it. MPCo.
