I have a feeling I shall perish from this Earth before another 5 Star is appointed.

With regard to George Washington, he was never a 5 Star, but only a 3 Star. He said that since the Colonial Army was not big enough for more than a LTG, he would not presume to hold any rank higher.
I have met General Alexander Haig at the Ellis Island rededication in 1991 (I think that's when it was)

Great soldiers all of them, but the rank was eliminated for a reason and I would not like to see it come back.

When I was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas back in the early 1970's General Omar Bradley, the last general of the Army, and a 5-star who was living his final days out in retirement at Fort Bliss Texas. And that's about as close as I ever got to actually meeting one.
