It takes a lot. It takes a community to want to help. It takes them to have shelters and build houses for these veterans. It takes businesses to get these veterans jobs. It takes a VA that can help our veterans get the help that they need when they need it. It takes a veteran who will be willing to swallow their pride and accept the help. It takes a village. It takes money and time. Many people will donate money but not the time.
It takes a Presidential act or Congress to send us to war, but it takes the whole nation to ensure that we take care of us when we return. We are failing at it.

Well said Captain Maurelli: I believe a national surge in VA care for veterans is need. Yes I know money is a factor. If we can spend it on war; we can spend it on our veterans.
despite the bad press, some VA's are not all doing a bad job. Some are overwhelmed.

I was homeless this time last year, living out of my car and making due as I could with a VA that was too apparently eager to please everyone but those who actually needed it. It got squared away by Sen, Burr who expedited the process and very quickly I might add.

I am definately interested in helping the homeless veterans. I intend to purchase a six unit building for homeless vets in the Chicago area. I actually know of a veteran in the Chicago area that has apartments for rent to veterans. There is an organization that we have reached out to see if we can assist them with housing veterans and they have not responded. This would only be a drop in the bucket, but it is something.

Tiffany-there may be a number of programs we can help you find or partner with. Let me know if you are interested.

Dependence on the VA will prove just about as fruitful as any other program. That is, not much at all. The emergence of so many entitlement programs has done little good. Indeed, our bloated government has done much to detract from private charity and programs that provided most of the assistance in the past. Some progressives go so far as to discourage private giving inasmuch as they don't trust us to donate the "right sorts of things". Ultimately, veterans must rely on their brothers in arms just as they did on the battlefields. Personally, I am raising this issue in the coming weeks with veterans organizations, to see if we can't do more despite government interference. Not only must we address homelessness, but also consider the plight of the newly minted veterans who will be released from active duty in coming months to return to an economy where unemployment stands at worse than 18%. (Yes, you read that correctly. Govt estimates are greatly skewed to keep voters from realizing the true extent of govt failures.)

There are Federal Buildings that are sitting vacant, everywhere. We are closing military facilities and giving them to the states, one of the conditions to passing these facilities over, is that the State must house homeless veterans and their families in the turned over housing areas or barracks

Funny how we can open up military bases to house people coming into this country illegally, but can't do the same for Vets!

My church and I have tried getting a house for homeless veterans but have bumped into so many obstacles that we have put in off right now. Is there any suggestions?

Sergeant Warrick. How many veterans are in your area? I have a suggestion in the mean time. Get organized as a nonprofit org. See if you can't get help from VFW, American Legion, or and like organization. Then have a fund drive to obtain a sizable parcel of land. Stage a warehouse on it with equipment for placement and fabrication. Get a bunch of containers and start creating container houses. Some for sale and some to keep for the homeless to reside in and employ the newly housed, able bodied veterans to make more housing. They are viable and resilient enough to withstand powerful windstorms. You can make a 4000sqft house complete for $60k . This movement will generate an opportunity for the homeless to not only be homeowners but business owners as well. And we all know, you're more likely to have pride when you have ownership.

There are a number of different types of building material based structures that could be used. For example, log homes and buildings made from bales of hay. Both of these use a renewable resource that may be available for next to nothing.
There is even the new technology of using 3D printing to build houses.
