How is this a question? The AF doesn't drive ships. Of any nature. Sure, they've got space planes. With no crew. They could conceivably ramp that up to WITH crew. 4, 5, 6 people? Nah. Only the Navy has the institutional experience to bring hundreds, or thousands, of people together to run a ship.

That said, what an AWESOME f'n question, Major!

Everyone here seems to Forget the Marines are Department of Navy (that's gonna stir up the shit), so technically the Navy would be the best choice for all around ship (spacecraft) to shore (planet) warfare. Plus, I know of more naval aviator astronauts than any other branch, which I think would make us the most experienced....

SN Greg Wright - Think of it kind of how star trek: enterprise had its military. You had star fleet, obviously a navy like organization, then Military Assault Command Operations (MACO). MACO was like a marine corps. But sustained operations on a planet would require a logistics and command structure separate from a naval force, which would imply that the MACOs which can function in a capacity similar to the Marines was really structured more like the Army. One thing not mentioned is that aside from Enterprise, no other Star Trek show acknowledged enlisted servicemembers on their vessels. Why did star trek have no Chief of the Boat or any other enlisted man who would likely be included in command staff discussions?

Even today there are no ships in space. A satellite is a bus with attached payloads. There are crews on the ground operating the bus and payloads. Years from now when weapons are allowed in space and space is a weaponized, joint operations area unto itself, it might make sense to transition the space domain to an independent Space Corps or the Navy. For now, the Air Force has the domain expertise to employ space force enhancement in support of geographic, combatant commanders.

Over a third of the AF budget is already space support to the Joint force. I'd hate to add another layer of management (and cost) by making Space it's own branch, but that's probably what the Army said in 1946.

Start out with the Air Force and eventually grows into it's own branch. United States Star Force?

Air Force, as they already well versed in handling "space cadets".
