Hard to argue against Mad dog or Chesty for the Marines.......but I always thought Dan Daly was a Marine's Marine. He won his first Medal of Honor as a private.....and another one later as a Sergeant Major. If you look up the term "bad ass", you will find a picture of Dan Daly.

I would also throw out John Basilone, His pic is right next to Dan Daily in the bad ass category.

I would go with MG Smedley Butler, 2x MoH, 1x MC Brevet Medal (for those of you that do not know - the Brevet Medal is between the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross)
Oh, and controversial as could be.

Here's a little something I get a kick out of; as this thread goes on, more and more (and more... and more) names of legendary Marines pop up as being deserving of the stated honor. There just seems to be a whole bunch of them, doesn't there?! BTW, another good choice? Gen. John A. Lejeune (was known as "the Marine's Marine" during his lifetime).

Mad Dog Mattis or Chesty Puller would definitely be in the top contenders. Personally, I would also throw Carlos Hathcock's name into the ring because every Marine is a rifleman and he is THE rifleman of the Marine Corps. There's honestly a bunch more names we could probably add, but Gunny Hathcock is one of my personal favorites.

SGT Joseph Gunderson - Close. Chuck Mawhinney had the most confirmed kills. "In the Vietnam War, kills had to be confirmed by an acting third party, who had to be an officer, besides the sniper's spotter. Snipers often did not have an acting third party present, making confirmation difficult, especially if the target was behind enemy lines, as was usually the case.
Hathcock estimated that he had killed between 300 and 400 enemy personnel during his time in Vietnam."
But I believe he is one of the snipers with the highest bounty on his head back then. I had never fired a rifle before the Marine Corps, so hearing all the stories of him made him someone I personally revered.

Corpsmen were somewhat dismissed "back in garrison" in my earliest days in the Corps ("shanker mechanics"), but once in Viet Nam they were living gods, and deservedly so...!
