It's a pipe dream but I would prefer to have a party-less system in which a candidate could run on his/her OWN platform without having to rely on conforming to specific party lines in order to get the necessary support!!! To be able to run and represent ones constituents without fear of having to play politics and childish games. I would also like to see term limits for those holding Public Office. Sadly I suspect neither will ever happen.

Although it normally does not come into play, the Electoral College should also be eliminated. Candidates should be elected by pure popular vote. They say every vote counts, but in reality that is not true because once a state's or territory's electoral votes are won, it negates every single vote of the opposite party in that particular state. Most recently in 2000, Bush won the Electoral Vote but lost by over 540,000 votes...that HALF A MILLION voters who were not heard. Although I am glad it worked out that way, it still is not the way it should work in a representative government.

Sorry, brother, but have to disagree with you on the Electoral thought. Look at the Constitution (Article 1), the Connecticut Compromise and the Virginia Plan (which served as the foundation for the Connecticut Compromise). Also, take a look at this website which has a ton of great information.

There is a movement in the nation to invoke Article III of the Constitution and bypass Congress to convene a Constitutional convention to impose term limits on Congress. It will begin at the end of this month and it is important that 34 state legislatures vote for this convention. If that happens, then all it takes is 38 states to ratify the amendment and Congress will have specific term limits. It is important for each of us to contact our state representatives and senators and urge them to support this endeavor. If they refuse, then they need to go too.

AS I study Poli sci in school, I feel we need to update the Electoral college.

1) Federal statute requiring the Electorates to vote according to what there constituent majority voted for.
2) each representative district vote according to what there district voted (no longer focusing on a few states to win)
3) senate Electoral votes would go by the state as a whole.
4) District of Columbia 3 would go according to the voters that reside there.

this I feel will give the American people the chance to know there vote makes a difference while forcing the runner ups to spread there love to more than one state.

I heavily lean Republican since they have the best policies for a country of this magnitude. Sadly though, the Republicans of today are like the Democrats of 20 years ago. Many purport false and deceptive ideologies. If we can get back to true freedom, less government and more acceptance of responsibility, we would be better off. ANY candidate who supports that will get my vote but they must have been consistent in their prior workings too. Like MAJ Dews stated, I have crossed party lines (twice) but only because the candidate was honest and stood for good beliefs. Like CPL Brown stated above, I too can expand on this but due to the sensitivities of this forum I won't post it. Feel free to message me if you'd like a polite, adult dialogue about stuff. We both just might learn something new. :D

SSG Bond,

I would disagree on one thing, Republican have crawled into area covered by moderate Democrats. Democrats have cut sling on their own old school moderates and Conservatives. The Democratic Party has usurped the political philosophy of the Socialist and Communist parties and amputated their support for red blood Americans. Both parties suck and most people find themselves forced to decide between the lesser of two evils. When this happens, no matter the outcome you have nothing but evil. Sadly, many support the party that gives them, or promises to give them, more entitlements instead of supporting the party that makes sure the Government does less…E.I. what it is Constitutionally empowered to do. We all take an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, right? Is not, enforcing the limits put in place on the Federal government by the Constitution just as much defending the Constitution as defending our Nation from a foreign invader? Maybe that is a bad example because our Federal government allows millions of people to illegally cross our borders, but you get the idea?

After rereading my own post, and for the record, I am not advocating anything other than actively voicing dissent when we see something we perceive to be unconstitutional…I.E. wrong…and pulling the right lever in the voting booth when our elected officials continue to fail to represent the people (they are there to represent, not rule) and ignore the oaths they took to defend the same Constitution we swore our oath to.

Last, SSG Bond your name freaking rocks.

I have been up on a soapbox about how this country has been run since I turned 18. We won't go into how long ago that was, but my beliefs have remained rooted in the Constitution of the United States. That is the direction this country needs to turn, back to the Republic it was when America was first founded. I believe this country can be salvaged but it is going to take someone who is willing to stand alone if need be, and tell the special interest groups to, as my grandfather used to say, go piss up a rope.

MSG, well said in your comment above on progressives. The problem though is NOT the progressives themselves, who are a quaternary symptom, but the people who are a tertiary symptom themselves.

The crux of the issue can be split two ways. The first can be explained with the old adage of giving a mouse a piece of cheese he'll ask for a glass of milk. After the glass of milk, he's going to want a cupcake. After that, he wants a meal. After that he wants dessert, etc, etc, etc. I'm sure you see where I'm going with that. The second and most critical part is too many are not getting involved with things solely because it doesn't pertain to them, whether directly or indirectly. "Oh, it's just those crazy (insert random other state). It doesn't affect me here in (insert state)." Eventually it WILL affect them. If we are not willing to stand up for what is right then we are doomed to continue to fail and fall. If we are not willing to stand up for our neighbor in need of assistance/back-up/moral support, then we are already toast.

However, I believe all political candidates should have some prior service experience or work experience with an agency charged with national defense. i.e. NSA, CIA, DOD, etc.

Republicans and Democrats are animals of the same Stripe. I call them RepubloCrats, and with few exceptions there is little difference between the two parties. I am seldom disappointed with my characterization. Both parties are intent on increasing the size of government, and on increasing Federal control over the States and the People. I Vote Libertarian in every position I am able. Being a Vet is a Plus, but not a requirement in my opinion. I've known many a Vet who could care less about the Constitution, and many more who pledge fealty TO it!

I would like to say that all our countries leaders should be vets. In Great Britain even royalty is required to serve in the military. If more politicians served they would have a greater appreciation for the military, vets, and the problems that they are faced with after service, especially combat service.

I do not ever see this happening, but I believe it would give our leaders a greater sense of community and fidelity to the people if they had to put their life on the line.

Perhaps if we had more military veterans as candidates they wouldn't become just another politician that puts party before country! Nothing can be guaranteed but MOST vets - albiet senior officers may be exempted - put unit (country) before themselves!

I do not think it really matters. All who ascribe to public service above the local level have special interest they must answer to. To run for state or federal office requires huge amounts of money and special interests provide the money they need to sustain their campaigns. When the candidate accepts this money they are then in a position where they must do what the special interest agenda dictates. The last president to stand up to the special interests was JFK and he was assassinated. Ike had warned him about the military industrial alliance and he took it to heart and was going to keep out of war in Viet Nam, but that all changed with his death. To save our republic we must have term limits for Congress and remove special interests from the equation. Then, and only then will our elected leaders work for We the People and not special interest.

Wow, I tried to post something that sounded a little bit like that the other day, and they blocked it. You are right though. I have laughingly thought about running for president from right here in my living room using word of mouth and Facebook. But what are the chances of a lone nut from Oregon being elected? I would say Slim, Shitty, and None.
