A few times I have seen people on here with the name SGT (Servicemenber) or MAJ MAJ as usernames. There are some others that I have come across that I forget. Why are people allowed to continue without the full disclosure of their identities in their profile?

COL (Join to see) In settings you can choose who can see your name, picture and other information. Just because everyone cannot see it doesn't mean it's not there.

Didn't know that. Thanks. I don't like it on this forum, but I guess some people are more sensitive to security.

I certainly understand people on active duty or a reservist wanting to conceal identities with a political comment forum such as we have here.

I believe you should own what you say. There is one person on this site in particular who was using an alias name or initials instead of their name who was well beyond unprofessional. I think our comments on this social media site should be directly attributed to the owner. Say what you mean. Mean what you say.

If I have made a comment here, I own it. It's me. Maybe if someone is foolish enough to make me a very senior leader, I'll have to change how I do business. That being said, that's a hard road for me to go down...so I figure no one will have to worry about me getting promoted that high.

I agree with owning what one says. I tried to limit my political discussions while in uniform but now that is no longer the case.

If I recall correctly some profiles end up incorrect do to "importation" from Facebook.
The "hidden" profiles like SGT (Servicemember) are folks who aren't sharing their information with people outside their contact list. We have a variety of options including Full Hide, Initials Only, etc.

I had tried to keep my Facebook account hidden as much as DoD asked back when I was serving but it seemed that it really did not keep people I had never known from trying to friend me. I have solved the situation by simply not using Facebook very much. I like it but hate it all at the same time.

SSgt Robert Marx - I saw a letter from the 2nd Radio Battalion CO posted on our webpage that said; Do not post name, rank, serial number, mos or residence if still active on any social media ...I am not sure if that applies to retirees or veterans... Maybe some smarter than me on this subject may know.???? But I am too old to worry about that

Sgt Tom Cunnally, those are security concerns revolving around ISIS targeting social media sites. I understand it, but I don't agree with it. I also believe it should be mandatory for service members to travel in uniform. A service member may be a target, but that is our role in society. Better us than civilians, and frankly we are harder targets to take down in general.

Sgt Tom Cunnally - It is very important to not post your social security number any where but especially not online. Anything recorded on line is to be considered a permanent posting for nothing on the Internet can be deleted.
