Maybe this is just me but I do not see any point besides that it is in the regulation that we wear our rank on the patrol caps in the army. You can clearly see the rank on the blouse or combat shirt depending on the situation. Although it gives you a second place to look for the rank it seems as if this could be changed. Why not your branch of the Army ie. medic, infantry, ordnance.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. There are plenty if more pressing issues that should be addressed besides rank on pc.

SFC (Join to see) - Early 1960s. There are photos of BRO troopers wearing full-color & subdued DUI pocket patches in Vietnam.

MG Depuy told Westy they were the Big Red One or Bloody Red One, NOT the Big Black One. After him though, Division CGs turned tail and it became the Big Black One to this day. I had a friend of mine that had to constantly tell folks that if they could take his BRO off his right shoulder, they could have it. No one could! When he retired a LTC in 1990 it was still on his right sleeve. LOL

I would not choose any of the polls choices. I do think that since we have/are going away from the mandarin style collar of ACUs that we should go back to rank on collar instead of chest, and officers wearing rank and branch on their collars.

Didn't think about that one. But thank you was just curious on peoples thoughts. I wasn't in when soldiers wore the rank on the collar and officers rank and branch but that also doesn't seem like a bad idea.

I wish we had it on our chest when I was in. It would have been easier to see rank especially for those 2nd Lieutenants who were salute happy. The rank, especially on fatigues, was not always recognizable since they didn't shimmer in the sunlight then we'd get bitched out for not saluting. It should be where you can easily see it several feet away and not when you're practically on top of the person. Whoever had the idea to put it on the front of the shirt had the right idea. Too bad somebody didn't think of it years ago. They also have better uniforms today than we had. Anybody remember those ugly OD green fatigues? I always thought they looked like a gas station attendant's uniform.

This might sound borderline inappropriate, but I always feel awkward with females because the rank sits right at breast-level and you're walking up staring right THERE long enough to see their rank. Maybe I'm over-analyzing that, but I always feel like I look like a creeper or something.

You know that years ago when we had BDU's we had rank on both collars and the PC. Officers had there rank an branch on there collar. years before that NCO's had there rank on there sleeves and officers on the top of there shirt. Things change I still miss having rank on our collar but that is just me.

CSM Charles Hayden - It is a very odd spot to train your eyes to go and look for someone's rank insignia.

With the exception of the army the other services do wear the insignia on the collar, seems a lot better place for it. seems having you branch insignia of the left collar and rank on the right was a lot better idea than placing insignia that while wearing certain equipment You can't see the insignia at all.

SSgt Howell - Good point on that placement of insignia on female soldiers , seems esp in this day and age someone should have though of that and left things alone.
