I have worked with all the services frequently during my career. I see the ups and downs in each service. The Army seems to have the biggest attitude towards itself though. I would like to hear thoughts as to why Soldiers seems to talk bad or dislike the service that I love. Some may disagree this is true, but I do not think I am off base by stating this.

****FOLLOW UP QUESTION****

Do you think it is possible for the Army to ever show the universal pride in service that the USMC does?

It’s a smaller force. It’s also part of the Navy which seems to honestly be more organized and standardized, in my opinion. Of the branches they have the best mix of professionalism and military tradition. The Marines are a department of the Navy and being so are run well. I think the Navy also harps about the Marines (and SEALs too) because there hasn’t been a ocean war in a long time and the Marines are the Navy’s boots on the ground engaging in combat in an era where we haven’t face a sea based enemy (or true air power enemy) in many years. Naval and air power are critical but everyone pays particular attention to who makes up the majority of dead and injured listed in the newspaper and DoD morbidity and mortality lists. Obviously the Army takes the prize for most dead and injured whether it is the total Number or the ratio of injury and death risk per person. Each branch naturally wants to brag about their war fighters. The Navy is no different. It’s understandable and with budget constraints and some politicians suggesting eliminating the Marines and rolling their mission into the Army or back to The Navy, they want to preserve their legacy. The Navy also have the best relentless marketing campaign and uniforms.

It's a simple case of numbers. The majority of service/support duties for the USMC is carried out by the USN. The majority of the Army are clerks/civilians in uniform.

The only support the Navy gives to the Marines is in the medical field. They give naval gunfire support to anyone that needs it, and the ANGLICO Marines help the Army and Allies to coordinate that phase of supporting arms. Otherwise, the Marines are self sufficient. We will use our other services to help out if they are in theater, but they also call for Marine support if present. What areas of service support give to the Marines other than that stated?

CSM Carl Cunningham I think that because the Marines are taught that they are Marines first and foremost before their MOS they have the pride in their service. Also, their size allows them to do this. In the Army were are very much focused on our MOS or the unit we are assigned to. This causes us to take pride in that. We are proud to be "grunts", "SF", "Airborne", "FA", "Engineers", "Sappers", etc. This also causes us to be competitive or mock others such as Airborne vs. Air Assault or Airborne vs. legs or infantry vs. POGs or even within a unit such as Rakkasans vs. Bastogne. The loyalty lies with the unit and MOS instead of service as we are large.

CSM Carl Cunningham You don't know me SGM, but I have lots of pride, and I set the standard for my Soldier's to stimulate and while I don't walk around proving anything to anyone, my actions will speak volumes.

I do not believe any of this to be true. I am 46 years old and was in basic in 1991 USARMY...never made it to my MOS, but my younger brother made it to USMC REcon...all I can say is the power is within. When you are born in to a military family, these ideals never go away...I love ALL my brothers in arms and my family. Being a 46 year old female and dealing with a family death that occurred while in basic, it is something you NEVER get over. a tough journey to say the least...

Do not voice opinions that you know nothing about.

I will always know that because of my family, I have made it as far as I have.

The oldest of 5 and a single parent...I will always stand tall toward everyone, but I will not allow myself to be pulled down about the trauma with post-war or deployment.

From only an Army perspective, i agree with those who say the USMC pride is in the USMC, and the Army pride is unit based. The Army being so large with so many divided missions, I think it's natural to have unit or mos pride. I dont think that's a problem, along with the rivalries. As long as when the S hits the fan, everybody has each other's backs. I was in the infantry and have never been I combat, but I have been in a fight or two, and one was to back up a group of Marines and another was being backed up by a group of guys from the USAF. I've been a cop for almost 25 years, and have been in some extreme high stress situations. As much smack as we would talk about other units or departments we all took care of each other.

While the Corps, starts instilling the pride, history in boot camp, for the army it's not an emphsis or at least it wasn't back in the day during basic. Although I understand that more of an emphsis is made now days. Mostly in the unit level is where it develops in the army.

The Marine Corps, honors their history and traditions. They don't try to reinvent the wheel every few years like the Army has done. There is a board in the Army called the Sgt Morales board, it's not even after a real person! They have Plenty of heroes they could have named it after and didn't. Audie Murphy board always confused me. He didn't get out a Sgt, so why is the board set up for NCO's? the 15 years I was in the Army, I saw two slogan changes, four different utility uniforms, and 3 different pt uniforms, not to mention two changes in our dress uniform. While some might say that that's a good thing, it was an unnecessary pain in the ass that cost soldiers money and costs taxpayers a shitload of money.
