I have worked with all the services frequently during my career. I see the ups and downs in each service. The Army seems to have the biggest attitude towards itself though. I would like to hear thoughts as to why Soldiers seems to talk bad or dislike the service that I love. Some may disagree this is true, but I do not think I am off base by stating this.

****FOLLOW UP QUESTION****

Do you think it is possible for the Army to ever show the universal pride in service that the USMC does?

The Army is large and the Marines are small. Marines think they are special because they are Marines. Its that simple.

Back in the 1960s things were a bit weird. I found out in basic that the Army has a definite attitude about US vs. RA soldiers. I was RA, we had 60 men in our basic training company, we had 59 RAs and 1 US. That poor lonely US caught hell for 8 straight weeks (basic was only 8 long weeks then.) The Monday after graduation from basic I ran across this poor guy crawling in the dirt at Ft Lewis in infantry AIT.

We have haters too. Exhibit A: "Eat the apple, fuck the Corps."
But seriously, I think the Army pride shows thru in their specialized units, Ranger, SF, Cav, Airborne etc. For whatever reason, the everyday soldier doesn't think of the Army as anything but a job.

I held many mos' while in the U.S. Army and pm very proud to have worn the uniforms. Every branch has had another's 6 and saved their ass, so as far as I see it, and experienced it, we are all Brothers and Sisters.

I had a lot of pride watching Army Amor divisions destroy Iraqi Infantry and Armor divisions in Desert Storm. To imply the Marines are better at fighting without context is false.

The way the Army treats it's personnel is the biggest contributor that I saw when I was in. They seemed to take pride in beating a person down almost as much as building them up. I believe that both the Marines and the Navy have a much higher esteem and pride that begins from the top. The army lacks that. I got out in 78. Back then, we were treated much differently than today.

I did a stretch in the Marines as a tanker and retired from the Army as a 1st Sergeant in an armor company. When I switched to the Army the first thing I noticed was many needed a haircut, their uniforms weren't as snappy looking as the Corps, and they couldn't march with a shit-----But they had their MOS down cold. They were infinitely better in their field skills than most Marines I knew. So, don't sell the Army short. There may be a lot less ou--rah, but their pretty good at kicking ass.

The major difference between the USMC and US Army In pride the difference in the way the marines carry on their daily business on/off work. They have esprit de corps more than any other service it has always been that way. The marines have a very stringent standards on who will “hang out” or be together unless at official functions by rank. They have lines on what ranks will hang out with each other-as you become more senior they expect you to not fraternize with the junior ranks. They have always been that way especially with their enlisted. I am sure that is part of the reasons they do not have the problems when someone even a rank above them tells them to do something at duty there is not a debate about why, let’s talk etc. they do it. Retired Navy loved working with marines rank structure well defined. More services need this. Navy Chiefs are very much life this do not cross a Chiefs mess unless asked in. Love honor and tradition.

I served in the Marine Corps from 79 to 88 and every single day , That I served in a Marine Corps the Marines constantly promoted the Marine Corps history, Esprit de Corps, Pride in the Marine Corpse in your uniform and in yourself as a Marine . Marine Corps history is constantly talked about and promoted within the rank and file. Motivational signs about the Marines are everywhere on a Marine Corps base in the barracks in the head every office everywhere you go. Also the Marines do not lay Hollywood just make any type of movie or TV show the picketing the Marine Corps a bunch of goof balls with the exception of Gomer pyle USMC. The Marine Corps protects its Image To the Ninth degree. And when a Marine Corps does allow Hollywood to make A TV show such as (jag). Whatever Actor or actress is playing a Marine Corps officer or enlisted personnel . believe me that uniform and Marine Corps attitude is reflected perfectly.
There's this constant training of Marine Corps pride in Marine Corps history and Marine Corps warfare that goes on consciously and sub consciously throughout your tour of duty as a United States marine.
Maybe the army needs to emphasize is history and drill into their soldier the future soldiers and officers so they can have more pride and what though that came before them did for their country. Hollywood make movies at the picket the army as a bunch of buffoons or Undisciplin'd P.O.S. I think people that enlist in the army and the Air Force going with the mentality that the work is not near as hard or doesn't take as much dedication to succeed then it does in the Marine Corps in the navy, Some instances the navy has it over the Marine Corps. Maybe the army needs to rethink its training syllabus and instill more pride in their soldiers and not look to cut back on discipline just to get numbers.

Few understand the transformation that the USMC creates in the developmental process. 1st the USMC is the smallest of the services, they have a special mission and since their inception they were our nations shock troops. Their history has been documented and taught to every marine in spoken and written traditions. 2. There indoctrination is a process of complete breakdown and they only will build up the best and most capable force. Because their numbers are limited they find that this creates the mental picture of strength and honor. When you compare the two services you will find that one is so much smaller than the other it clearly can be more selective. 3. The Marines have a quality control program that ensures only the best are retained. The USMC has a top 25% rule, this is why there are so many who former Marines, 75% only serve one tour of enlistment, only 25% are going to be able to serve as career Marines. This creates and corps that is a cut above, and ensures they are the most qualified. When you look at the reality of how they are created, trained and managed there is a lot to be admired. However when you look at the Braggadocios Smack Talking, and commitment to the USMC, only those who have been tested in fire can truly understand...I am not a Marine but have served beside some of the best and have had Gen Al Gray and Col Jerry Kelly as mentors and I will stand proud for the USMC any time and any place!
