Why does the Army not have as much pride as the Marines?

I have worked with all the services frequently during my career. I see the ups and downs in each service. The Army seems to have the biggest attitude towards itself though. I would like to hear thoughts as to why Soldiers seems to talk bad or dislike the service that I love. Some may disagree this is true, but I do not think I am off base by stating this.

I loved my time in the WAC from 1968-1970, and cried when handed my discharge.

I personally think they have too much. All the MARSOC guys I've met are cool keep their mouths shut. "Quite Proffessionals." Then there's the ones that think they are tougher than woodpecker lips just because they are Marines knowing damn well they are just cooks. Nothing against soft skill MOSs, but know your roll and act accordingly.

That may be part of the difference. "Soft skill" Marines are still combat trained riflemen, regardless of MOS - and they think of themselves as Marines first and cooks or supply after that.

"Know your role and act accordingly", is the difference. Every Marine is trained to is trained to be a rifleman and every Marine Officer a rifle platoon commander. I personally never met a Marine who signed up to be a cook. Most people I think who enlisted in either the Army or the Marine wanted to serve their country and an MOS was assigned to them. It seems like motivation in any MOS should be considered a good thing.

Seems to me that's what we need. If I had a cook next to me who was also a badass Marine Rifleman, that translates to problems for the enemy, not to us. There are no "just cooks" in the Marines because each are trained as riflemen FIRST. You're not much of a leader if you can't recognize that. The title of this thread is "Why does the Army not have as much pride as the Marines?". If the differences were not evident, the question would never even come up.

We do, we just don't take it to the "Heaven's Gate" cult like level the Marines do ;o)
Real talk though, I served in the Marines long enough to know the dirty secret... While Marines are amongst the other services, or after they get out, yeah, they're all about espirit de corps, "we love the Marines, Rah, Rah"...
But while they are still in, and only Marines are around? They do nothing but HATE the Marines and shit talk it at every opportunity. I believe the colloquial phrase was "eat the apple, fuck the corps" if I recall correctly? No one hates the Marine Corps more than young Marines ;o)

LOL, I've heard Marines say the exact opposite - in private. I also think it's because they are a smaller element our government has tended to abuse due to "appearances." I've only been in one unit in my 40 yrs that didn't have exceptional pride and that was because of piss poor leadership. Overall I think this concept is over exaggerated.

Not as "Brainwashed" to be obedient to orders. Ironically the movie "A Few Good Men" opened a lot of people's eyes to the way things were done and why we should have our moral compasses still in working order while in uniform vs blindly following our leaders. There's times when our leaders actions are immoral and unethical going against both the "Rule of Warfare" and "Global Treatise" that the USA signed as standing law. We can't have any leader in or out of uniform all willy-nilly decide to ignore those laws.
The Marines are broken down beyond what the Army, Navy, and Air Force does in rebuilding their people into warriors. While they often forget that unlike decades ago when it was join or go to prison this mostly is no longer the case. Of course that's changed again thanks to the lack of support for the military but also that the fact "Once weapons were manufactured to fight wars, now wars are manufactured to sell weapons"... As the Military has become a booming business of killing our fellow human being rather than helping to lift them up and make the world better.

Marines are the literal "tip of the spear" of our fighting ground forces and need to exude ultimate pride and confidence needed to be effective. It's a mental state of mind. However, let's not forget all branches of the military exude confidence. I have served in the Air Force, naval Reserve and US Army National Guard. Pride is exhibited in all the units I have been in. Let's face it, it takes all of us working collectively to win a war.
