Why have the NCO not regained the control of the Soldiers they once had?

The NCO use to rule with a commanding voice now they are nothing more then the middle man trying to keep things glued together!

1SG,
I feel some of this is due to the fact that the military is progressing away from the roots of a disciplined force. When as a leader you are being told you cannot take someone out back and smoke the piss out of them and make them truly understand what the did wrong and that it will not be tolerated the NCO loses credibility and the discipline that was once given.
I use my new Soldiers as a example. In almost 10yrs I have never seen Soldiers come out of basic training like they do now. When I was a private I didn't talk to anyone over my team leader unless talked to first or I had a reason that merited the conversation. New guys fresh out of basic come up to me and try to talk to me like I'm there best bud from High school. There used to be a sense of Awe and fear given to the rank and it seems that it has dispersed with the changing of the military to the softness we now exhibit.

Well said!! When I was a young troop, fresh out of Basic and Tech School (AF version of AIT), junior enlisted did NOT start a conversation with a SNCO unless spoken to first! An E-4 could get away with it IF it was mission related and s/he was in a leadership position. The SSgt's word was final in most cases. You did NOT do an end run to the Captain or Major and cry about how unfair the SSgt was being.
