Large population of young men plus time on their hands plus (ahem) other things on their hands equals porn consumption.
Whether it was pinups or dirty magazines or polaroids from home or the internet, this has been true since long before I got in the Army.

While I can understand the potential of any addiction to compromise a soldier's readiness, I don't think porn is the end all, family shattering threat to partner faithfulness. I think a lot more contributing factors lead to adultery: loneliness, distance, personal dissatisfaction, etc. It seems it's far more likely porn addiction is a symptom, rather than the cause of adultery.

It's all fun and games until someone looks up porn on their DoD computer....although the proxy servers are supposed to block adult content.

LTC (Join to see) - That's a valid point, Sir. I've never seen a bulletproof proxy server deployed in an enterprise environment.

To be honest with you, I think it helps to prevent sexual harassment. I'd prefer my soldiers touching themselves in their own private space at their own personal time than inappropriately touching others.

If you drill down at least for men its not just about watching - I think for men porn is more about sexual gratification without any emotional baggage - don't have to love, respect or care - its all about using pron for instant self gratification.

Things that lead to marriage problems are more significant than sexual desires for ladies dressed up like school girls - like losing interest in investing in the well-being of your significant other, lack of respect or admiration, no commitment or exclusivity and disinterest in understanding.

Porn is more about escape - midgets, donkeys, girls in jail and gallons of motor oil - nothing weird

I never thought about it like that because porn has always been around in war back to soldiers smuggling Playboy on deployment and moral groups coming to service troops to keep up moral. It's more about the individual really, I've deployed many times and never had issues on deployment but have friends who never deployed and cheat all the time, porn just keeps your urges at bay

Roger Sir, this whole time I thought it was contraband back then but hey eyewitness account says it was fair game I'm all for it. These days stuff is a lot more graphic in nature and against the customs of certain countries so they became prohibited unless purchased in those countries

COL John Hudson - I don't remember them taking anything other than after shave and knives. Anything that would fit into your "B Drawer was OK. Supposedly the "B" Drawer wasn't inspected.

COL John Hudson - Good God! I entered At the hell hole of America! I remember having a barrel at the back of the room and someone telling us to put that kind of stuff in it! I always wondered what happened to that small pocket knife I dropped into that barrel! LOL!!!! As far as Porn goes! At fort Polk there was always diseaseVille! or better known as Leasville outside the main gate! LOL!!! So many young troops would come back with the clap or crabs it was unreal at times! And no matter where you went in that town there was porn of some kind! My buddies and I would hope a bus and go to Lake Charles. The DI's would raid the barracks now and then and collect all the porn, I knew they would keep the best and turn in the rest!

Porn isn't just popular in the military, it's popular everywhere... like on all of our computers for instance.

Watching porn no more causes people to commit adultery as watching war movies causes people to join the Army. Oh, wait...

But as to why porn is popular, I don't think that's really so hard to put a finger on.

Run silent, Run deep did it for me. Porn wasn't a factor, all we had was what we called eight page bibles and we didn't have wives due to the pay back then. Times change.

First off, addiction is prevalent in the military because addiction is a way to cope with all the crap that happens. Addiction is one way to help medicate negative emotions, cope with bad experiences, and to help alleviate stress. Service Members tend to experience more stressors than our civilian counterparts, hence addiction may be more prevalent in the military.

As to pornography as an addiction, there is a lot of credible research out there now on the negative effects of pornography on the individual and society. Pornography has been linked to human trafficking, increases in sexual assault, sexual dysfunction, just to name a few. Unfortunately this research is getting the same treatment that cancer research got in the '70s when smoking was linked to cancer. Check it out here:

Addiction in any form is harmful, and will eventually effect someone's personal and professional life.

Folks, whether you like it or, there is a lot of discussion about porn leading to unhappy significant others. Even to the point of considering divorce or adultery. I personally don't care if people watch porn or not as that is their choice to make. However, reasonable responses from significant others to their partner watching porn are:

* I am not attractive enough to keep my partner satisfied so he/she watches porn.

*I must not be good enough sexually to satisfy his/her needs.

Porn also has a tendency to make "hooking up" seem easier than it actually is. I'm not sure about you guys but when I delivered pizzas post high school I wasn't seduced by the hot woman in the house. Also, porn portrays women into being into sexual acts that a lot of women consider disgusting or revolting. This leads to partners feeling as if they can't satisfy those needs or that they are "boring" in comparison. Lastly, a lot of people consider watching porn to be the same as cheating as you are meeting your sexual needs via someone other than them. So while the question itself is a bit absurd on this forum it is not technically wrong. Lastly, how the average woman views porn in comparison to the average man is different so you can't just look at it from your side of the street since marriage is two-sided.

I think the problems arise when the issue is hidden because someone thinks it is dirty or "bad." Open and honest communication in a relationship about porn will probably not result in anything negative. It's the secrecy that degrades trust and ultimately causing the failure.

I like your honesty. There's a lot of people in denial on this rally point, who yelling at me through their words, just because I asked this question. I wasn't trying to judge or push my beliefs off on anyone. Oh well. Anyway, thanks for being honest. I was also in the same situation as well, and that's what got me thinking.
