Why is porn so popular in the military? It has the potential of leading to much worse things like adultery.

1) What an insane amount of opinion on this thread. I can appreciate that folks might have an opinion on this topic (I do: in my opinion, clearly, porn has no negative impacts on marriage). Why aren't people interested in actually discussing this topic at a level beyond opinion? Seriously, one person out of all the respondents posted links to research. This is exemplary of what we see on RallyPoint: an enormous amount of opinion based on nothing but individual perspective, very little discussion beyond opinion.

I'm concern about this being a legit question. I would say it may do the contrary sometimes. Maybe when were deployed or the men are deployed they can use porn as a way of taking care of things without being unfaithful. And I'm pretty sure porn is not only popular in the military! Anyways is not like units are giving it away

Deployed means different things to different people. Until you have spent 70 or more days submerged on a vessel around 300 feet in length with 130 men, then your appreciation for the fairer sex really grows. We didn't have porn or mixed genders waaaay back then.

I speak for the many 19-25 year olds who deploy obviously not everyone needs porn however you understand the nature of why it is more rampant in the military after deploying to a place where there is high testosterone and no loved ones nearby.

There is a correlation between the two. However, it really depends on the individual and his/her situation. The more you watch porn, the more you think you can do what they do in those films. Going further, the more you watch the films, the more you wish your spouse looks like & acts like those actors & actresses in those films. Couple that with the amount of "work" we do in a day, we use that as a crutch against our spouses who stay at home and watch the kids. You feel entitled. You want sex now a certain way and your spouse does not want to do it the way they do it in porn. Everyone whose answered this question can say, its easy to stop watching it and/or do something else, well I counter that argument and say, we're all in the Army and we all know the phrase "there's always that one."

Appreciate your opinion, but on a topic like this, actual research/sources are much better. The almost complete lack of sources on this subject presented in this thread is exemplary of the fact that there isn't an established link between porn and anything you say here.

Any habit or addiction can be detrimental if it ADVERSELY affects the individual. It doesn't matter if you are starting at stamps, cat videos, or erotica. The assumption that one type of addiction however will lead to another type of addiction needs actual proof though.
We understand that some things are considered more or less societally acceptable than others, however that does not necessarily mean that they will become "gateways" to worse behavior. Smokers don't necessarily become crack addicts. Weigh Lifters don't automatically start using steroids. Therefore why would we assume a linkage between pornography and adultery?

Right you are Sgt. I will go a step further and say most addictive behaviors are more a lack of will power. Calling them an addiction is providing a crutch and an excuse.

MCPO Roger Collins I'm not sure if I could sway into most. I can say there are "habits" we form, which can be altered/replaced/broken, which is definitely will-power based, and there are addictions which seem to be "chemical" based (either external or internal).
As an example, eating certain types of food becomes a habit, usually of convenience. However our bodies being biochemical machines becomes accustomed to specific fuels. When you changes the fuel type (food), your body will begin to react differently (withdrawl) mimicking "addiction." The cravings, and "detoxification" process of going from "Unhealthy" (Fast Food) to "Healthy" eating can be dramatic to say the least, just like the reverse. This is just using food. Almost any behavior has similar parallels however merely because our bodies' adapt to the presence of certain stimulus. We get used to things, and changes "hurt."

Generally, it is popular among those who do not have other options for their natural sex drive and its effect... generally speaking... is as a substitute to adultery. It may lead to some other issues, like unrealistic expectations of what a "normal" person of the opposite sex "really" looks like... or how to properly value another person... or how to establish and keep a loving relationship where both parties are valued and nourished. But, it is not likely to be the incentive for adultery. Humans come predisposed... we don't need an excuse like porn to prove that we are flawed individuals.
