Seriously I wanna know. Mainly from you senior leadership and your mentality when it comes to this specific headgear, or even as to why it's frowned upon in the field when it's clearly authorized to be worn in the field.

Also if you are just going to bash me or make smart ass remarks because I'm asking this question, then don't even leave a comment. Thanks

The Boonie is meant for covert ops to help conceal the human form (breaking the lines of a round head).
Perhaps you could suggest patrolling techniques practice to your command, so you and your team can practice in style.

I’m retired now so I use my obsolete boonies down here in Florida for just that purpose. Hehe SGT (Join to see)

Of course it doesn’t. So then with every uniform upgrade since jungle fatigues, why is it the bookie hat was issued ? Special operations isn’t just the Green Beret!?! I was a green Beret. I was also a Rakasan, and wore it in the field with them. Do you know who the Rakasans are?SSG Douglas Espinosa

Who cares if it cuts down on skin cancer by providing better sun protection? Who cares if it is more comfortable? Who cares if it looks better? It's different and anything different is bad.

Don't recall ever seeing guidance on how to wear it. Just did a better job protecting from sun and rain. Had one with mosquito netting.

Never was for me. In the 82nd it was the standard head gear on deployment or anywhere else If not wearing beret or helmet.

I don't get it either. I was issued one when I went overseas, but was forbade to use it. Personally, I think it much more useful than the PC in the field. Just my $0.02.

When I was in the 82nd ABN, we were issued the boonie hat, and told to wear it in the field, our steel pots were on our ruck sack, no one needed to tell us when to use our steel pot, it was common sense.

Unless you are in the Marines, they actually wear it. I know I wore mine during my time as an 0311 and 0341 (11B/11C) and I have seen Marines wearing it nowadays. Yes, it was under field conditions and during deployments. Obviously wearing it could come down to Command decision, this is a standard-issue good old Army gear/uniform, so I guess a Commander in coordination with his CSM could authorize the wear of it.

You are the only leader commenting on this issue that has made any common sense. Most of these comments are just blowing smoke up soldiers asses. There are right and wrong ways to do any thing and some piss ant NCO telling any Sergeants Major or Senior Officer on what they are or can do is total BS. Tell your stories right soldiers you got your ass ate like a Hershey chocolate bar and then you got it ate again when your 1SG and CO caught up with you.

I always loved my Boonie! Wore it in Iraq and had I a command at the time I’d have allowed them to!

I wore mine folded up sides string tied up and over. My jump wings pinning the strap up. When confronted I just pointed to my wings and said " I wear it cause I got these and I can."

Nope, sorry, that's a problem. Brim tied up defeats the purpose of having a brim for sun protection.
