Will I get deployed or come back home (National Guard) if my unit is in the middle of a deployment when I complete AIT?

My unit leaves for a deployment in the spring, but I go back to Fort Benning in May for AIT, will I join my unit after training or come back home?

This will all depend on the need of the unit. If they need you when you are done with AIT, you could join them later. If they don't need you, then you will stay back with the unit in what is known as the Rear Detachment. This can be easily cleared and explained by your NCOs and your Chain. Don't stress. Just focus on getting to your AIT and passing that.

Thank you, I was just confused as to what would happen since I report to and RSP and not my true unit until after AIT, but now it is cleared up.

They are going to Afghanistan to train their police, but that's all I know at the moment.

If you do not deploy. The other thing you need to ask as well, is if that deployment counts towards your 2 weeks AT for the unit. Then if your held back as rear detachment, you need to make up the 2 week AT somehow for that year. Agree your NCO's should get the answers for you from the 1SG.
