I was already in the process of trying to get into the IMA Program when I got automatically promoted to E6 without putting in a packet. I got accepted into the IMA program and tried transferring out but the unit is telling me I need to decline my promotion and go back to my old unit and transfer to IMA that way. Is there a way around this since I never put in a packet to begin with? I even told them I would stay my year and they are telling me that even if I did that I am required to go to DS School to keep my rank and the thing is I have a major shoulder injury with a profile that would of prevented that and they knew about that when I first got transferred in.

You mentioned a profile, is it permanent? You can’t be a Drill Sergeant with a permanent profile, they know this. If you are willing to stay for the year to keep your new rank, I know there are places they can use you. I hate when “leaders” stand in the way of Soldiers plans and career progression, this is not leadership! If they are not going to work with you or help you transfer to the IMA position you were approved for, I would call HRC and talk to your IMA coordinator. Where is this DS Unit? I still have a lot of contacts in that world.

So here’s the thing, my profile would of been completed after my surgery in March but due to covid a lot of places shut down and the process was prolonged. The profile is temporary but ongoing for now because I have to go back and get surgery a second time on my rotator cuff in Jan/Feb which will result in another 9-12 months of recovery, and if and only if that goes well, I will be taken off of that profile. Before I name drop units, and develop an issue with a unit I’m trying to get out of, I will talk to some people to weigh my options. I really appreciate your response.

SSG Shad Toliver, I can respect that. I suggest you have a sit down and sell it to the 1SG and CO this way: While I’m here I want to do what I can to help however I can. Tell them about the status of your injury and what the road to recovery looks like. Say something about how you wouldn’t mind going to DS School, but due to your surgery coming up and the therapy after, DS School is a long way out, and you don’t want to negativity effect their numbers. That being said could you put me in an admin slot for the time being, where I will do the best job possible. Then at some future date, let me go continue my previous plans in the IMA, with my new rank.

CSM Eric Biggs I did talk to the CPT and 1SG. They are unwilling to work with me and are leaving it at the fact I can’t go to DS school anytime soon and with the new surgery popping up they want me to decline, go to DS school or face rank reduction which will not be easy for them to do but.. as the commenter posted below, apparently they don’t have to strip me of my rank, it is their choice to do so as they try and force me out. I did have a long talk with them and it seems the bottom line is to decline since I want to go IMA in the long run. I do appreciate your help in this matter. This is a very stressful situation.

SSG Shad Toliver, sounds like SFC Christopher Adame, have you some good info. Sound to me like this Command team does not understand what real readership or taking care of Soldiers is, and that is unfortunate. Best of luck, unless you want to send me a message with details and I can makes some calls and inquiries?

Someone asked a very similar question on here a while back. They were conditionally promoted in a DS position and had to leave. They had to give up their rank.
