I am currently TAD to a school for 88 days in Virginia whilst stationed in San Diego. I was told that my sea pay clock would RESET after 90 days and I would not receive a kicker after 36 months. but cannot find any documentation to confirm this. Does anyone know if this is true?

I guess this sort of depends on what you mean. Sea time is cumulative overall. If there is some kicker for consecutive seatime, it's something I don't know about. For example I have something like 50 months of sea time, but that's spread all over the place. I still get paid based on that total, not just on one continuous time I was at sea.

Yeah I just realized this after reading your response below. It's something I've never had to worry about because for the aviation community "sea duty" is only "sea time" when deployed on a ship. For those stationed on a ship it's all "sea time" even when the ship's in port.

LCDR (Join to see) I ran into this when I was a young Marine, when I was "attached" to the Kitty, while she was at Port. I started accruing sea time, which to me made no sense. I wasn't "at sea," but that wasn't the technical definition.

LCDR (Join to see) Yes sir. I am told after 36 months of consecutive sea pay you receive a "kicker" which is substantially more. Something around $400 a month.

Are you talking total time at sea or the consecutive bonus (Premium Sea Pay for being over 36 consecutive months).

PO2 (Join to see) Unsure. My understanding is that as long as you are attached to the ship, you keep it, since you have haven't PCS'd. The TAD in excess of 90 days rule isn't actually being tripped, so you "should" be safe. But you'll need to check with your PERSO to be safe.

I ran into a similar issue when I did back to back schools in '99, which tripped a FitRep requirement where there normally wouldn't be one.

I should have read this reply. The consecutive thing is something that's always bothered me for the guys who work for me. Consider this: If you're stationed on a ship that whole time is sea pay. If you're stationed in a squadron, only the time when you're deployed to the ship count. Why is that? I've had to try to explain this to an E2 or E3 who worked for me who went through A school with folks who are stationed on the same base as him and deploy on the same carrier. His friends get sea pay the whole time and he doesn't. Eventually that adds up.

LCDR (Join to see) - The way it was explained to me is "berthing." Ship's personnel have a significantly different berthing standard than non-ships personnel once you reach home-port. "In theory" once ashore, the squadron will be assigned a barracks, or authorized off-base housing, whereas the ship's company is still required to stay in standard berthing (unless married).

Edit: That said, if someone wants to live in a coffin rack & all the rest for $70/month instead of a barracks room, more power to them.

You are partly right. If you are TAD for more than 90 days then your sea pay stops but not your counter. You are still eligible for your kicker. I have to add that these were the rules back in 2013.
