How many firearms are imported into the U.S.?

It is a bigger business than anyone would think. Most come through Canada and Mexico and the numbers are staggering many from European and Eastern countries such as Japan and China. All imported firearms and ammunition all legal and NAFTA had little bearing on the total number imported as Mexico and Canada are our trade partners.
From the years 2008-2017:
From Canada - Long Guns. 2,622,488: Hand Guns, 27,556: Ammunition, 448,730,356 rns.
From Mexico - Long Guns. 8,099: Hand Guns, 50: Ammunition, 2,920,138,195
In 2018 from Canada, 82,132 Long Guns: 28,796 Hand Guns and Ammunition, 39,943,019 rns.
" " " from Mexico, 137901 Long Guns: 271 Hand Guns and Ammunition, 21,250,404 rns
In contrast, during the period 2008 -2017, the U.S. exported 1.7 million long guns, 315,000
handguns 642 million rounds of ammunition to Canada and 137,000 long guns, 33,200 hand
guns and 188 million rounds to Mexico.

I don't see a shortage of guns in the country any time soon. Or, the number of buyers.

Capitalism.
Connecticut (aka eastern california) was built on firearms, look what happened to it when they essentially kicked out all the firearm manufacturers and emplaced People's Republic of California level gun laws. Good bye state revenue.

Connecticut and a few other N.E. states had their firearm history established during the revolutionary war. No longer are they the center of American manufacturing of quality firearms. As you so rightly pointed out, lost is state revenues but good paying jobs,
health care and retirement funds. Liberal Californian thinking is nothing more than a cancer on our society.

The list of firearms manufacturers in Europe is longer than my, and one of the largest, and most popular, is Glock. They are making some firearms in the US, but that is a recent development. Some "American" companies, such as Springfield, are making guns overseas. Taurus is a Brazilian company, and while they are now making some guns in the U.S., the majority come from Brazil. Some of the North American importers are in Canada, and guns come in through them from all over the world.

Our Armed Forces carried Baretta handguns for many years, and those came from Italy. They are transitioning to SIG handguns, which are made in the U.S.

There are a couple of large ammo manufacturers in Europe that have a huge American presence and market.

Most if not all US Glocks are made in Georgia

LTC Lee Bouchard The Scottish in me says to wait for the right deal, because what I really want is a SIG P229 in .357 SIG, but sticker price on that pistol is right at a grand, and that is definitely out of my price-range, but what is in my price-range is a SIG P320 Compact in .357 SIG. I already have a 9mm P320, which I carry on Sunday for church security, so I am very familiar with that weapon. I have seen used P229's on sale for under $400, but I didn't have the money at that time, and they sold out quickly.

SGT Steve McFarland -
I am big Sig fan too. I have two P-226's. one 9 mm and the other in .22. Also a M11-1a.
My wife likes her P-320 and shoots it well. Your choice in .357 in a P-229 is a good one.
I am sure something will come your way sooner or later.

LTC Lee Bouchard I also have a P365 for EDC. Both of my SIG's were used, but the P320 was factory refurbished. I had to send the P365 back to SIG for persistent FTE, and their warranty service was superb. Top-end replacement was done by their Custom Shop.
