Unfortunately, that are to many of them that they only scratched the surface by weeding some of them out !We need to continue to get rid of them and set a stage of present to let them know we will not put up with toxic leadership.

Unfortunately, this person is a bit of both, but when he tells a SFC that works for me that he should never put the needs of his soldiers before himself, I would define that as toxic.

Unless that SFC takes heed to that advice and further sets that as the standard, then it is just poor leadership and not toxic.

I think there are definitely toxic leaders out there, no doubt. however, I have seen soldier attributing "toxic leadership " when they conduct themselves other than of an NCO. I think that mediocre NCOs and Soldiers alike hide behind the "toxic" word to allow themselves to continue with the mediocrity and laziness. Leaders are getting confused and scare of the word toxic. As I stated before YES there are tons if toxic leaders in our ranks, but we also have to look at the situation at hand and do our job by providing training guidance and most importantly COUNSELING to ensure Soldier are not getting away with murder and ensure that when they throw the word toxic we are able to SHOW that we are just HOLDING A STANDARD.

Chief,
Because a downsizing Army is one that thrives on conformity of operational thought. Outside the box thinking is no longer desired as failure will sometimes follow. Failure in a down sizing Army is a ticket home. This situation feeds a snow ball effect as poor leaders get promoted higher in the ranks.
COL G. Reed wrote a paper on toxic leadership (http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/milreview/reed.pdf)
In it are the following quotes:
“We have a system that is totally su-pervisor-centric in terms of incentives, rewards, and punishments. The only person whose opinion counts is the person who writes the OER [officer evalua-tion report].”
“What we don’t know is what the subordinates and peers think. I would submit to you, and most would agree, that people we have worked for who are toxic leaders—the
subordinates know and the superiors do not."

The Army has promoted people the last 10-12yrs based on if you just met the TIS requirements it seems plus when you get promoted too early to tend to get complacent and arrogant and prideful, and the same things you use to do as standard now has become lax, thus you start infected those around you. just my two cents. and for SSGT Guina QMP stands for Qualitative Management Program
