With the suicide rate higher than a joint and the VA trying to get their act together, what are your thoughts about this?

I think it's the enemies curse. But, I'm weird like that.
Just to see the lack of support from home, not even lack of support; but outright disgust for soldiers. No ticker-tape, no parades. Just home to, well not friends for sure.
I just think there has to have been something done on spiritual levels to allow this to happen.

Attitudes toward the wars changed as time went on. A lot approved of the war in Astan, but not in Iraq. Most of us being soldiers before, knew there was no choice on where you were sent to. Civilians that have never served, have no actual clue what the military is like. We do,and a lot of us have our ears open. We know what it is like.

Suicide is a vexing issue to say the least. I was at the center of this process and discussion in the Army. We can figure what likely precipitates it, but we still were not getting anywhere. Despite our vast efforts to slow this down, we were largely ineffective. I believe, for some odd reason, suicide is more socially acceptable in this modern age than it was in my younger days.

I wonder about the effect of the shifting attitudes towards suicide have. It used to be that suicide made the person a posthumous pariah. That said, I'm not sure I'd find going back to the old way of thinking about it acceptable.

I believe most of us expect the parade and band playing when we get back. When we don't get something similar to that, we tend to look down a bottle for answers of what we went through. With all the social problems in life there are some who find it hard to adjust and choose to take the road less traveled. I have felt like that.
How irreparably changed my life has become. It's always the last day of summer and I've been left out in the cold with no door to get back in. I'll grant you I've had more than my share of poignant moments. Life passes most people by while they're making grand plans for it. Throughout my lifetime, I've left pieces of my heart here and there. And now, there's almost not enough to stay alive. But I force a smile, knowing that my ambition far exceeded my talent.

There are many reasons, ranging from dealing with the numbing pain that one has to relive ever time we get new provider or 'Comp and Pen' boards. Or the countless relationships that have been ruined due to having to retelling and pain over and over again. Somethings area better off left buried in the past. Just lost my wife of 14 years, due to not being able to get into see someone for mental health through the V.A. fast enough. I wasn't comfortable talking to someone outside of the system. Oh well, considering her spending habits were part of the overall problem, I may be better off without her than trying to spread time worrying where we are getting money to pay for things we can't afford.

I think most sucide rates are on ptsd. If the va trying to help more by reaching out to current and veteran, the rates should drop a bit.

We have been taught to question everything, and as a result we trust very little. Soldiers struggle to find purpose in what they have done, are doing, or will do.
We QUESTION:
Our government,
Our churches,
Our schools,
Our news,
Our parents / families,
Even our chain of command.
The very foundations of our country are attacked. We are now as a country in a major identity crisis, and as a result we have QUESTION & NO ANSWERES! The answer is simple. Go back to the core values of America! Rebuild the foundations. Start in your self.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. -Psalms 139:14
Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. -2 Timothy 2:3
We do still live in the greatest country in the world, and I believe Americas best days are ahead of her. And the only ones that can restore it to its former Glory are those that were willing to fight for it! THATS YOU AND I! It's time to find a RALLY POINT!

I don't know about Sgt Anthony Rossi, but when I was growing and I know the Generations before me we question nothing. For many of us, it wasn't until we got into the military when we were told we could refuse unlawful order, was the first time we could question one orders. Then on the other hand, we were trained not to question anything, because following your Sergeant Orders in all cases would most likely mean your survival. This was still during the Cold War may I add, nothing was questions, the biggest joke to those of us in the military was some of hog wash the news outlets and Government was putting out to the General Public. As well as those of us who study the Soviets intently, knew they were in much more worse shape than we were, for all purposes of getting mobilization of Reserves. Yet, it was stressful none the less, know several idiots oops High ranking Officers were still willing trade our hides for limited trade off that may or may not help out by the end of day let alone the end of week.
It is because of living under those condition that many of us Veterans have gone out raised up generation that Questions everything. Both extremes have their flaws, because just doing things blindly, means you never know if it really good idea or if you being fleeced. Where Questioning everything, means you lack thinking through for yourself, and insult everyone else in accusing of them of trying to pull fast one. Yes when things seem shady, or you honestly don't understand it, then ask away, but to ask question on everything about every facet of every little detail goes overboard.
With that said, Yes when we are going through some of these so called crisis, and they can give no answers let alone solid answers on how they are going to solve them. Is clear indication they have clue that there is problem. Our economy has been going through Depression since before President George Bush took office in 2000. Due to several factors including mounting Credit Debt most American have, Corporate Downsizing, due to the downsizing many of the people having to take jobs that paying only fractions of what they were making, and in the future Housing Market Collapse that happen in 2007. Throw in many local governments and State Government throwing out Tax Credits to draw the limited companies that would move Factories and HQ to new digs, that allowed them to have free services. Forcing their Citizens to pay more for the Services that they provide. These are just examples why we question everything today.
Then you go to the V.A. with copies of you orders, and medical history in the Military, and then claim you don't enough proof. When you provide in black and white. Yeah right not enough proof. Maybe if you had been the one it happen too, and were filing the claims, you would think it was freaking enough. No I don't wonder why their 22 suicides a day. I don't understand it either, our Government is failing to keep it promise to us. We are failing by not having their backs too. Then again when they keep things to themselves, we can't help very much either. So if you having thoughts please reach out let someone help.

The VA is FINALLY starting to address this issue and that's a step in the right direction at least. The sad part is though, at least in my opinion, there are plenty of local programs that also address this. These local programs are often better than what the VA offers, and that is a problem.

I don't see much to change with the VA anytime soon which is a shame because soldiers need help sooner then they can get it
